Art Prof Clara Lieu introduces the first of a series of videos explaining basics of anatomy for artists. Examples of the use of portraiture for surface detail are the facial reconstructions of Ancient Egyptian mummies with related portraits. The portraits (Fayuum portraits) all date from the 1st to 2nd centuries AD and were produced using an encaustic technique ( Walker, 1997). These portraits have been analysed by Egyptologists to determine hairstyles, jewelry, fashion and social status. It has been estimated that there are more than 1000 mummy portraits, but fewer than 100 are still bound into their mummies.
