About this deal

Your Merino socks soaking up lots of water, means that they do a good job wicking, which is what you want against your skin. OK for biking (where they stay clean and have an easier life), but even then they've never last more than a year. Perfect to be used on their own for walking, running, etc or as a liner to give a heat boost underneath your sailing, cycling, motorbike, skiing and other socks/boots. They're fine for a few hours at a time (so a 10k is no problem), but I think they'd get pretty rancid if you wore them while you worked up a sweat all day. The general rule for Yellowstone is that you should pack for all four seasons, and while it's unlikely there will be significant snow on the ground when we're there, it's not impossible.

We prefer ordinary socks in warm weather because they breath better, but if you like dry feet all year or sail in a cool water area, the thinner waterproof versions may be for you. Short gaiters won’t cut it as the water wicks up and makes your trousers soggy so might as well not bother. Our Geckowear waterproof socks are the ultimate foot-protector in wet and wintry landscapes, and are a must for any serious explorer. Yeah, Sealskinz were pretty much essential on the Dark Mountains and, for me, any long winter activities. There are countless styles, ranging from thin, low versions for runners to high insulated socks for hikers and sailors. The moss—which literally covers everything—holds the water, and from November to March it feels like you are biking through a wet sponge.

Neoprene Wet Socks are now softer and have more stretch than ever which allow these socks to span several shoe sizes.

PS testing revealed very low insulation value (see “ Sailing Socks,” PS January 2019) and this round of testing cemented our opinion. I've always had a problem with gaiters, and have never liked them, so I have been trying to think differently about how to keep my below knees and feet dry. I seem to have a problem on winter fell runs that once my feet get wet they never seem to warm up and go numb especially bad at high elevation often not thawing out until I'm back on lower slopes.
