With this, the 23rd studio album from prog legends Yes, and following on the heels of their somewhat underwhelming 2021 album, The Quest (which didn't sound much like Yes at all), there was some cause for concern. A better equality of balance between guitar and keyboards throughout the album would have been good. Okay, just going to say up front, I am going to digress for a while before I say a word about this album. YES received unconditional support from InsideOut boss Thomas Waber, who encouraged them to keep going in the studio, months before The Quest would even go on sale.I don’t know why the new Yes album showed up early in such bizarre fashion, but I like to speculate.

In October 2021, the Yes line-up of guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Geoff Downes, lead vocalist Jon Davison, and bassist Billy Sherwood, with Jay Schellen guesting on percussion, released The Quest. But the album kicks off on another level with the beautiful song "Luminosity" embellished with orchestral arrangements. When the ripples of the water had settled, Dean said that "the lake became a perfect mirror to a very brilliant night sky", an experience that Rogers said was like being in space. In my view orchestral input with Yes music works very well but not to the detriment of losing keyboard input.

Steve Howe's persistence and dedication have paid off, and the late Chris Squire's selection of Billy Sherwood has here been repaid in spades - he has genuine presence and his supporting vocals are eerily reminiscent of the master. Geoff Downes plays well and adds some nice, rich creativity that's seemed largely missing since 2011's Fly From Here.Well, that depends in which type of Yes fan you are: a lover of the breakthrough The Yes Album, which defined the group’s sound and positioned the group high in the progosphere, or maybe your preference is the New Wave-influenced Tormato?
