Under his guidance, I began to read in French, discovering the works of Baudelaire, Flaubert, Camus, Sartre, and Fanon. It was a torturous, humiliating procedure that entailed lying facedown on an examining room table with my jeans around my ankles.Equipped with a stack of bright yellow legal pads and sophisticated pens, I sat at my desk, feeling very grown-up as I leaned back in my chair and lit a cigarette, glancing around my new surroundings with glee.

Everything smells the same, looks the same, feels the same, but you are different; the contrast between who you were when you left and who you are now is heightened against the backdrop of old haunts. After I left home, after I graduated and moved to a different time zone, the phone became our umbilical cord. I wasn’t sure if the romantic subtext of our letters was in my head, but I worried that if I didn’t take the initiative soon, our correspondence would peter out. Born in New York City to a Tunisian father and a Swiss mother, Suleika attended The Juilliard School's pre-college program for the double bass, and earned her BA with highest honors from Princeton University and an MFA in writing and literature from Bennington College.

A scree of oozing nicks, thick scabs, and fresh scars soon marred my legs as if they had been beaten with rose thistles. She placed a hand gently on my arm, and went on to say that she had a daughter about my age, and that if she were my mother she’d want me on the next flight home. Scottish theologian Andrew Melville is especially well known for articulating this doctrine, and the Scottish Second Book of Discipline clearly defined the spheres of civil and ecclesiastical authorities.

These are all ritual experiences that help us bridge the distance between “no longer” and “not yet”—but re-entry after a traumatic experience has no such clear ceremony. And so she set out to meet some of the many strangers who had written to her about their experiences of life, death, healing and recovery in response to her Emmy-Award winning New York Times column, 'Life Interrupted'.She taught us about pointillism, showing us the masterpieces of Georges Seurat and giving us Q-tips dipped in paint to make our own dotted landscapes.
