About this deal

Your breast is firmly compressed between two plates while mammograms are taken to show the radiologist the exact location of the area for biopsy.

Fluoroscopy helps in the accurate location of such radiopaque foreign bodies and facilitates their removal [ 4]. In a skin punch biopsy, a tiny device that resembles a cookie cutter is used to remove a very small sample of breast skin and the tissue immediately under the skin. You will likely be referred to a breast cancer specialist, and you may need more scans, lab tests, or surgery.Doctors who specialize in studying cells and tissue samples for signs of disease (pathologists) will study the biopsy sample in the laboratory and make a diagnosis. Dr Thornton will investigate the nipple discharge by performing an examination and reviewing the breast imaging ( mammogram and ultrasound) and also occasionally undertaking a nipple smear. We can connect you with trained cancer information specialists who will answer questions about a cancer diagnosis and provide guidance and a compassionate ear. Multi duct discharge particularly that which is not spontaneous (eg- stimulation to the breast can produce a physiological discharge) is usually bilateral and surgery is usually not required. All patients who take part in these trials help us to improve treatment for other women in the future.

This type of breast biopsy may be used to assess a breast lump that's visible on a mammogram or ultrasound or that your doctor feels during a clinical breast exam. A breast biopsy is a safe test, but your nurse will tell you who to contact if you have any problems afterwards. You might have contact details for a specialist nurse who you can contact for information if you need to. A needle biopsy sample may reveal what's causing inflammation, and what types of cells are involved. During the procedure, a needle is attached to a gentle suction tube, which helps to obtain the sample and clear any bleeding from the area. Your medical team uses the pathology report and the results of the other tests to determine the stage of cancer and to design the best treatment plan for you.

The surgeon makes a one- to two-inch cut on the breast and then removes all or part of the abnormal lump and often a small amount of normal-looking tissue, known as the “margin. If you received an IV sedative or general anesthetic, you'll be taken to a comfortable place to relax while the medication wears off. A surgical biopsy is usually done in an operating room using sedation given through a vein in the hand or arm and a local anesthetic to numb the breast. In this situation, we would usually like to obtain more tissue because occasionally we find more atypical cells and, sometimes, a cancer. For instance, the radiologist may find that your mammogram results suggest a more suspicious lesion such as breast cancer or a precancerous lesion, but your pathology report reveals only healthy breast tissue. If there is a small amount of blood in your breastmilk because of nipple trauma, it will not harm your baby. Information about a therapy, service, product or treatment does not in any way endorse or support such therapy, service, product or treatment and is not intended to replace advice from your doctor or other registered health professional. You have a dressing over the biopsy site, this is usually a paper stitch with a waterproof dressing over the top.
