For less than a fiver delivered, you can’t really go wrong. Recommended: M.A.D Touch Up Paint Before filling in scratches with touch-up paint, stop by your local detail shop or speak with the head detailer at your local dealership. Other than the overly big brush, it couldn’t be simpler to use. The paint claims to be ‘self lacquering’, and although we were sceptical it did return a decent finish which lasted through our wash tests once it had been left to cure. The colour match wasn’t quite as good as the Ford or Hycote, but it was close enough to stand up to a three-metre away inspection. To deal with chip damage, we’ve produced our own range of chip, and car scratch repair pens. You simply pop the cap and cover chips and heavier scratches. As the paint dries, it blends in with the finish of your car, making scratches and chips disappear. From start to finish, Langka provides the tools you need to prepare the paint chip, fill it in, and then seal it from further damage. Included applicator tips help you apply paint to the smallest of paint chips, while the microfiber cloth easily removes any excess paint you might have as you go along. The blob eliminator solution smooths out any spots where you may have applied too much paint. Finally, the sealant ensures the work you just accomplished lasts for the remainder of the vehicle’s lifetime. Your local dealer will still be pleased to furnish you with a bottle of paint of course, as long as you don’t mind paying the high price that comes with genuine parts. The box you will get over the counter contains two small bottles, one containing the colour coat and the other a lacquer which gives shine and protection. Both are applied using a small brush attached to the lid, in much the same way as ladies will apply nail varnish. With this touch-up spray paint, you’ll have a color match you can trust. Dupli-Color is the only brand that offers paint colors that have been tested and approved by vehicle manufacturers, so you’ll get a close (if not perfect) color match to your vehicle’s original factory finish. Designed to repair both chips and scratches, this product has an abrasive prep tip that you’ll use to remove any loose paint and rust present. Then, you’ll switch to either the paint pen tip for fine scratches and small chips or the brush tip for larger chips. Either tip gets paint flowing in small amounts for easy control. Finally, you’ll apply the included clear protective coat to seal, protect, and finish your repair work.

The Ford paint looked cheap next to the Chipex though, which seemed like it offered a sophisticated selection of tools and fluids but actually didn’t make it any easier to get a decent finish. If you have a rare colour, it might be one of your only choices though. Mer took the top spot purely down to the fact it supplied a DVD, rather than a video. The only problem with both is cost – once you have added in the price of paint, it’s possible that they will work out as expensive as a SMART fix. The ACDelco GM Four-In-One Touch-Up Paint Pen is exactly the product you need if you own a GM vehicle and want a flawless paint match for chipped exteriors. This chip repair product is a piece of GM original equipment, which means its color and its finish are made to match exactly what your car rolled off the dealership lot wearing. Our range includes: Car touch up paintsYou dab the touch-up paint onto the chip, wait for it to dry and then wipe off excess to using a special blending liquid and cloth. Once you are happy with the result you can polish it using a supplied fluid and microfibre cloth. Using it is very satisfying, but deeper or larger chips need several coats to build up, with at least five minutes drying time in between applications. After five coats – each with a new swab and fresh pair of gloves – we gave up. The result was no better than the cheaper kits, which makes it impossible to justify the price unless your car is a very rare colour which no one else can match. Ford Service We have previously been impressed with Hycote’s aerosol can paint, although the spray tins didn’t seem great value if you were trying to repair a big area. For stone chips the smaller amount of liquid in the container is unlikely to matter, unless you’ve been driving behind a gritter lorry.

riving with a small stone chip in your car’s windscreen should not cause undue safety concerns. In theory, a chip could spread rapidly and shatter your windscreen, but in reality windscreen experts Auto Glass say this is an incredibly unlikely scenario. The laminated design of modern car windscreen glass – windscreens are typically constructed from two layers of glass sandwiched either side of a sheet of vinyl – is incredibly resilient. There is a downside, of course, which is that the warranty on screen repairs is virtually non-existent, and if it doesn’t work you could still be in line for a windscreen replacement. If you’re not covered on insurance, or have a big windscreen excess, this is the risk you take. Don’t expect your repairer to do anything other than point to their disclaimer.
