However, the hauntings didn’t really start until around 50%, and then the stuff above just kinda took me out of it. When Silas begs Erin to get him out of rehab yet again, Erin puts her foot down and finally decides to set some boundaries.
Pros: 2/3 storyline were interesting, jokey jokes (but tbh I'm not sure if it was intentionally funny? She read it in a very interesting way that was completely true to the story, and I swear she made it feel more atmospheric and creepy than it had been if I had just plain read it. By the time we abandon campus and hop the wrought-iron fence surrounding Hollywood Cemetery, the four of us are all well on our way to peak fry. as the beastlord had expected he set off in pursuit, but also named Ghosteater as commander of the armies in his absence. At the edge of civilization, the young American captain learns not only the challenge of command but the courage to confront his own illusions, beautiful and terrible to behold. The Ghost Eater is a large graveling in the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon that has been devouring the spirits of the remaining Ascalonians.
I closed my eyes, remembering where I had last tasted this liquor, remembering back across the years, remembering how steady the hand had been that held out the cup to me, and how desperate the circumstances. I give GHOST EATERS points for an innovative plot that moves quickly and shows flashes of great literary skill, but it doesn't live up to its promise. I give "Ghost Eaters" by Clay McLeod Chapman a 4/5 as this was a very unique horror novel with the kind of original story that most horror readers will appreciate and freak out on.It is the perfect metaphor for addiction, and while the ghosts are truly and incredibly scary, so is watching Erin completely wreck her life in the course of days, as well as seeing the other Ghost addicts as they spiral all in hopes of seeing a lost loved one again (a woman whose child died of SIDS was especially heartbreaking). Either way, I was intrigued by the story and it really threw me for a loop a few times but maybe a few times too many that the story could have gone so many different ways. He had been planning to conquer more tribes and then perhaps dominate the whole area, maybe even take on the Blessed Ones in time for dominance. At some unspecified point, they stormed the house and found a huge gray wolf feasting on the Count's corpse.
However, Ghost Eaters may also have unique knowledge about the dead and the Underworld that they can barter in exchange for their safety, especially if the krewe is willing to tolerate some amount of ectophagia. I’m just sad I didn’t read it sooner, though it was an excellent start to the whole spooky season reading extravaganza. It’s absolutely heartbreaking, because the portrayal of how Erin and some other characters get involved with Ghost and then get addicted to it even though it’s bringing terrible things into her life is a really accurate representation of the dangerous downward spiral of addiction. It certainly makes an interesting statement about addiction, about wanting to numb the things that haunt us while consequently making it worse, but I truly did not enjoy the way these important messages played out on paper.
It's not really outright scary, but it absolutely is horrific - just imagine if ghosts could lick you, and you'll have an idea of just how uncomfortable some of this was to read. McLeod Chapman's writing is impeccable throughout and conjures up many a trippy, nightmarish and atmospheric scene.
