About this deal

The optional digital pen support gives you a new way to record your thoughts and ideas while on the go. Though the pointing stick itself was extremely accurate and pleasant to use, we wish Lenovo hadn't built its right, left and scroll buttons into the top of the touchpad. When viewing horizontally, the problem is relatively under control, and the variations in color and brightness are tolerable.

Impressively, the camera is sensitive to low-light situations, which means that the camera will produce a decently quality image even in low light. Both displays are on a similar level, although the HP 840 G1 can be equipped with a Full HD display. Hence, there is a need for a commendable performance, especially when other competitors have their business laptops in small sizes too. You only have direct access to the SIM card slot on the right side of the case and to the secondary battery at the back.

More performance is only available from the T440p-series, which is eitherpowered by the slightly faster Intel HD Graphics 4600(Haswell M) or the GT 730M GPUfromNvidia. Lenovo offers a wide range of laptops, from budget-oriented to daily use or high-end machines for gamers. It goes without saying that the typical characteristics of business notebooks - stability, reliability, available service and warranty options, excellent input devices and a correspondingly good display - must not be absent. However, it also requires more power, with a Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 47 Watts, than the Intel Core i7-2-core (37 Watts) or the ULV processors (28 Watts) of the same generation (Haswell).

The available ports cover a wide segment of the connectivity spectrum and offer the right connection for many situations. Lenovo promised that the new keys use the same mechanics as before and therefore provide the familiar and convenient typing experience, as well as a direct illumination of the keys instead of the retired Thinklight.

The brightness distribution is pretty good with 86% and we could not see any deviations with the human eye, even with a completely black background. The naming convention for the T Series was changed by Lenovo following the release of the ThinkPad T400 and T500 in July 2008. The first option comes with an HD (1366 x 768 pixels) resolution, while the second comes with an HD+ (1600 x 900 pixels) resolution. Our first measuring point (a distance of 5 meters (~16 feet) from the router through a thin wall) shows that both devices are very similar and can use the maximum available bandwidth.

Advantage in terms of software: The ThinkPad T440 has a Windows 7 Pro and a Windows 8 Pro license (each 64-bit). The maximum volume (white noise: 84 dB (A), 53 sone) on the other hand is decent and sufficient for rooms of 20 - 30 m² (~215 to 323 sq ft). The fan near the vent spun consistently even while typing this review, but it didn't get annoyingly loud. The laptop was meant to cater to users working with multiple networks and in different environments. Until now the Thinkpad T-Model from Leonovo, which was enhanced after the short ending -p, set the standard for professional users with high performance demands. In comparison, the HP EliteBook 840 G1, which has a larger battery capacity of 50 WHr, lasted 6 hours and 4 minutes in the web surfing test.
