About this deal

As she approached Virginia Street, a bright pink MARTINI BAR sign caught her attention. A few people were clustered together outside the front door, smoking and talking beneath a protective overhang. Marah eventually goes to rehab and begins to turn her life around, while Lucas begins to open up and deal with his grief. Through it all, Tully learns to forgive herself for the mistakes she has made, and the characters come to realize the power of forgiveness and the importance of family and friendship. It's about family (I suspect most of this author's works are) and how one messy family came together when a flood was threatening their house. Frankie lives in the house her sister and she grew up in, but now, the river is coming and the family wants to help. "That river. She's a her in my book. She's been a friend most of these years, bringing boaters who deliver groceries. Bringing birds and beauty. We've lived through storms and sunrises and sunsets. Winter Squalls. I want to see how far she's going to crawl up my hill. I want to know if she'll come into my house. Sometimes I talk to her at night. She's great company."

Throughout the novel, the characters deal with themes of grief, addiction, and forgiveness. They must confront their past mistakes and learn to forgive each other and themselves. In the end, they find a way to come together and heal as a family, showing the power of love and forgiveness in the face of tragedy. What is it about feeling “seen” that is so intoxicating? What other examples are there in the book of a character connecting with a stranger who shares their past? Source: Unsplash In the end, “Fly Away” concludes with Tully and Kate’s family finally coming to terms with Kate’s death and finding a way to move forward. Tully decides to leave her job as a talk show host and takes a break to focus on herself and her relationships. She reconnects with Kate’s husband, Johnny, and they start to develop feelings for each other.

For this reason alone, fans of the show will want to tune in to see how this fallout will shake itself out. But unlike much the first season, the reason Tully and Kate are feuding differs from the Firefly Lane book series by Kristin Hannah. Despite not following the books to an exact tee, the books will still help provide a bit more context. The danger of book to screen adaptation, if you watch the vision first, like I did, forms assumptions, and those can differ greatly from the original. I had to keep reminding myself which came first, and the story of TullyandKate came first by these well written, emotionally charged books.

A single, tragic choice and a middle-of-the-night phone call will bring these women together and set them on a poignant, powerful journey of redemption. Each has lost her way, and they will need each one another - and maybe a miracle - to transform their lives. Once, a long time a go, I walked down a night-darkened road called Firefly Lane, all alone, on the worst night of my life, and I found a kindred spirit. That was our beginning. More than thirty years ago. TullyandKate. You and me against the world. Best friends forever. But stories end, don’t they? You lose the people you love and you have to find a way to go on. . . . What do you think of Tully’s actions, like not going to the funeral and playing music to dance to at the reception? Was Johnny right to be as angry as he was? In the end, Tully makes the difficult decision to take a break from her career and focus on herself and her relationships. She reconnects with Johnny, Kate’s husband, and they begin to develop feelings for each other. Marah, who had been struggling with drug addiction, goes to rehab and begins to turn her life around, while Lucas, Kate, and Johnny’s son, begin to open up and deal with his grief.OVERALL: It's readable and interesting, but needed a few more developed characters for me to really like it. Lucy got on my last nerve and she was really the only person in this book, so for me it wasn't really a book I'd recommend. If you read the first book, how do you feel it did in continuing the story? If you didn’t, how do you feel the story held up as a standalone novel? Return to the world of FIREFLY LANE—now a Netflix series—from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah. She frowned and leaned forward, pushing the mail aside to reveal a Star magazine that lay beneath the pile. There was a small photograph of her face in the upper right corner. Not a good picture, either. Not one to be proud of. Beneath it was written a single, terrible word. Once, a long time ago, I walked down a night-darkened road called Firefly Lane, all alone, on the worst night of my life, and I found a kindred spirit. That was our beginning. Through the course of the novel, Tully and the rest of Kate’s family must learn to come to terms with their loss and find a way to move forward. They must also learn to forgive each other and themselves for past mistakes. But it’s just as much a part of life as birth is and we get through the same way we do anything: with love.
