About this deal

Many fascinating and amusing tales, such as Ron Dennis' reaction to Newey having his office anything other than grey. Wherever possible, I will include appropriate acknowledgement of the original authors, photographers and publishers. And he’s fabulously indiscreet about those he feels has done him a disservice along the way, even those he acknowledges a debt of gratitude to. Adrian Newey has created more winners than all the super-brain computers in Formula One put together. I agree that it's up to the author what's included - or omitted, and that's fine (unless, of course, such omissions leave a misleading impression of what actually happened).

Most F1 fans would assume that being an engineer Adrian would have had a stellar academic upbringing, so the early chapters where he traces his early youth, schooling difficulties and passion for motorbikes are eye openers. The feeling remains, however, that Newey spends much of his career applying finesse to irrelevant technology and picking holes in regulations; Newey implies that he could be doing something more interesting, perhaps relevant beyond F1, with his time. However the creation of the rival Indy Racing League in 1996 created a split which badly damaged the championship. Beautifully illustrated with never-before-seen drawings, How to Build a Car encapsulates, through Adrian’s remarkable life story, precisely what makes Formula One so thrilling its potential for the total synchronicity of man and machine, the perfect combination of style, efficiency and speed. Not sure that i will understand all of the details but with the help of my computer i will find out. pages of illustrations showing you how to draw the shapes and proportions of African animals such as Lions, Zebras, Elephants etc.

Whilst many of the stories that are told are ones of unrivalled success, whether it be at his early years at Williams or his ongoing time at Red Bull, the stories where things aren’t going to plan stand out as the most gripping, with the 1994 season being the hardest-hitting of them all. Whatever the motive, we got it on the car for Malaysia, which, combined with the natural pace of the car, gave us a front-row lock-out and, at last, a trouble-free run to a 1–2 finish. I don't understand their economics but they reckon that flogging this book cheaply will sell other HarperCollins books to me and you. Adrian also offers some honest self-analysis of his personal life and delves into memories of his family, his children and effect of his job on his past marriages as his career his flourished. A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrians thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays.

But not in a dry textbook way; he explains this and everything else within the context of the circumstances of the team and his life at that time.

As a Formula One fan since childhood I was delighted to receive a review copy from the publisher to be able to compare to the many F1 autobiographies and history books I've read across the years; I have to say this is one of my personal favourites as Newey is such an innovator of the sport and has such breadth and history amongst the pivotal teams in the sport that it is packed with detail and such a unique insight. Over the winter of '68-'69, even a few F3s were trying out the idea of strut-mounted wings, front and rear, (for example, Schenken's Brabham). The waste of life, the age-old questions about whether it’s all worth it, are all thoroughly dissected through both the memories of Newey and the writing of Holmes. For those F1 fans who wonder what Adrian Newey will be doing post-F1 – will see various hints dropped by Adrian throughout the book – you’ll have to read it to find out. He gives further insight into the goings-on at Woking (for more of which, see the recently-reviewed “The Mechanic”), and the difficult relationship he had with Ron Dennis before moving to join the ‘fizzy drink company’. Despite its title, the a book which offers a tremendous amount of insight into much more than just the creation of racing cars. You will find in it some of his original freehand drawings of, for example, the hugely influential Leyton House 881 nose shape, together with an illuminating explanation of the car’s concept and the thoughts behind it.

The book covers three areas: Newey's life outside F1, the world of F1 in the last 25 years or so, and Newey's contributions as designer and race engineer. In the book’s stand-out chapters, Newey gives a revealing and analytical assessment of the shortcomings in the design of the Williams FW16 in which Ayrton Senna crashed and was killed.

Ao meu ver, as partes mais interessantes são quando Adrian está contando causos aleatórios do paddock e de corridas, sem tanto foco em descrições técnicas. A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrian’s thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays. I found Priestley's book more interesting than Steve Matchett's, possibly less egotistical, but hey, these guys are operating in a high pressure environment - why shouldn't they be allowed to have an ego! For those studying the evolution of the F1 car between the late ‘80s and now, it decodes all the mysteries previously hidden by competitive secrecy while revealing the man behind most of the greatest cars of that time period.
