About this deal

In french review XTZ 10.17 was almost as good as 12.17 in a 10sqm room, so very near to Harkons room size. Plus XTZ has many tweaks (eq settings, port bungs) and beefy class d amp. I have never heard ported model in so small room so maybe other members can chime in about that.

We have an Indian(?) member here who went from XXLS400 to SB2000 and then finally to PSA S1500. Each upgrade was a good step up. I can`t remember your name, but if you read this reply here. From what i remember some forum has measurements for XXLS400, it starts dropping around 25hz. And lowest notes are said to be "soft" in BK. Again not a fair fight as the prices are quite different and SVS has digital dsp amp (Class D) and BK more basic one (Class AB). Plus SVS has better driver.. But for the price BK is still great, beating many more expensive speaker manufacturers subs. For Harkons case i would like to see bigger jump in performance, so XXLS400 wouldn`t be my choice as guy has more money to spend also. Jimi Hendrix used the grandfather of the Stereo 130, the Stereo 30, as the basis of his personal stereo system along with the iconic Lowther Acousta 115 speakers. I’ve read some of the same thread over on AVF, and I’m not going to answer it there as I want to say there’s a lot of BS being banded around by people who have no idea what they’re talking about. What is the FR of your Dali Sub? You need to ensure it can really have the crossover point needed for the Mins. Also, placing the sub as close to the speakers will help greatly in blending with the sub for a seamless sound. One of my Subs, a Velodyne only has a upper FR of 135Hz but as it is next to the speaker, it blends great.SUB E-9F er bestykket med en helt nyudviklet 9” low-loss long-stroke basenhed med membran i ren aluminium. The Oberon 3s have a sound that I would describe as articulate, especially with human voices, with a mid-range that is a bit more tilted forward in sound compared to my Revel F26 towers. When toed in, the treble seemed a bit aggressive and taking the grilles off heightened the effect. I would recommend leaving the grilles on and doing as suggested by the manufacturer, set them up pointing straight out into the room. Though they sound bigger than their size suggests, they really don’t dig deep in the bass department. Having a sub helped fill in the bottom octave made them sound bolder and more authoritative. Now, some explanation on my selection....my wife says she is not that interested and happy for me to decide but at the same time asking for a discreet speaker size!! Hence the compact Dali Menuets which review really well and look stunning. The KEFs also review well and I'm keen to compare it to the Dalis. I originally started looking at lower priced active speakers and, not being able to afford the KEF LS50 Wireless, I tested the KEF LSX against the Dali Oberon C. The Dali won hands down - clear, beautiful sound compared to a more dull, almost muffled, sound from the LSX. But I want to compare the bigger brothers for each. Any advice on what to look out for? I'm reading the Cyrus is bright and so might not pair well with the bright Dalis? As I can't test them at the same time as the Cyrus, any advice on the Powernode or Brio as alternatives, and what pairs well with what? I'll be looking to arrange a home demo if I like what I hear and if I can also get a Brio or Powernode to compare. They'll need to work for TV and Spotify streaming in a large lounge.

HT by-pass is now finding it's way into lower tier amps making such connections a lot easier. It was once the domain if higher tier stereo amps. I have a Dali zensor 5 fronts, vocal centre, zensor 1 surrounds. Marantz SR6010 receiver. Later going to get 2 upfiring atmos speakers. My listening habits are 50% music 50% movie. Spendor A1 (which I've also had) are IMO a better all-rounder and less fussy about placement due to their sealed box/infinite baffle design. They're not speakers with big personality, rather they major on even response across the frequency range, clarity and tonal accuracy. If you want to try something less expensive, but extremely talented, I very much enjoyed the Quad S2. The ribbon tweeter brings almost holographic imaging, and it's a well balanced design all-round - much more so than the older 11L and 12L models (which were very competent). It has been designed so that the DALI SUB C-8 D subwoofer works just as well with music and movies. The SUB C-8 D is anything from a boombox because it has an 8″ down-firing woofer that is strong and detailed. The Dali sub C8D has a built-in Class-D digital amplifier and can deliver a massive 170 watts, with peaks of up to 220 watts. This low distortion amplifier delivers a strong, well-balanced sound to the bass cone that fills even the largest rooms. The C-8 D is melodic and quite capable of getting (very) loud. You get the punch you want from action movies, but the C8D is deft enough to let you hear the various textures of a bass guitar rather than just a single one-note bass boom while listening to music. If you absolutely have to have streaming functionality built in to the amp I'd suggest the following for audition:

To fully exploit the combination you do have to have all your music sources connected to the Elicit, in my case that's pretty simple a SACD player. When I want to play music from the SACD player I only have the Elicit fired up and it acts as it should a pure analogue amp driving the R300s.Wow, what a difference! In the much smaller space, each sub reproduced deeper bass response that I could feel in my sternum; it shook the house." The new subwoofer from DALI features a 9” woofer, capable of moving lots of air with power and precision. The cone is made from pure aluminium for maximum stiffness and a becoming exterior. Furthermore, the heavy magnet system wields a massive 4-layer, long-stroke voice coil. Speaker-wise, the LS50 Meta (which I've had) are very good, but they're fussy about placement and I didn't find them as 'alive' sounding as the Q series. If there's any young fingers around be aware that grilles are not available for this model or the LSX. Magnetsystemet er særdeles solidt dimensioneret og ventileret, så både varmeudvikling og forvrængning holdes nede. Og helt i tråd med DALIs hæderkronede low-loss-princip er membranophænget designet til lang og uhindret vandring, så lyden bliver optimal ved både højt og lavt volumen.

The demo is this week and the retailer will pair them with the Cyrus One HD - their only mid sized option within my budget. Other options I will try to test are the Bluesound Powernode and the Rega Brio. The Sony manual says to crank up the crossover to it's highest setting on the subwoofer and set the volume to half way then do a calibration to allow the AVR to set the correct crossover frequency for it. The AVR set the speakers crossover to 140hz. With a stereo amp that has home threatre by-pass you connect the front pre-outs of the receiver, let's say for argument sake the 3600, into the direct RCA ports of a Rega Elicit-R. The Rega is now acting as a power amp for the 3600 and the front speakers are only connected to the Rega. However in HT by-pass the volume is controlled by the 3600 and the speakers are still EQ'd by Audyssey onboard the 3600. The integrated 170 Watt RMS Class D amplifier is a highly linear construction. The DALI SUB E-9 F will follow and render the required signal with an absolute minimum of bias. Designed not only for continuous power, but also for peak power, this subwoofer is able to deliver 220 Watt Peak Power. This is very relevant when it comes to both movie and music signals. I tried with quite a few subs like my REL's, BK Electric & a couple of others at the time but there was too much of a separation - it was quite evident. You really need to get a subwoofer which has a Frequency Response figure of +/- 3Db that goes up to at least 150Hz. Partnered with the DALI Oberon 5 5.1 system, the E-9F subwoofer helped secure the success in the 2020 What Hi-Fi Awards and a 5-star review. Considered one of the finest budget subwoofers from DALI in some time, the E-9F certainly doesn't want for critical praise. Here's a slightly curve ball suggestion: get an ifi Zen One Signature DAC and put it together with the amp of your choice. The Zen One is small, discreet, has a wide range inputs and sounds superb (well, I think so at least).
