In short, yes. While not the case for every robot we tested, we found some models that were able to reach into nooks and crannies and manoeuvre around furniture with ease – a task that many regular vacuums also struggle with. Since then, the market has exploded, and there are many companies making robot vacuums. Some of these offer a wide variety of smart features, while others are as simple as the original Roomba.Bin capacity: Robot vacuums need emptying more frequently than a regular vacuum, but there’s still quite a variation in bin capacity from model to model. The largest you’ll see tend to be around 0.7 litres in size, but they can be as small as 0.4 litres. Some models have larger bins built into their base stations that they automatically empty into when charging, but these tend to be very expensive. The 2,600mAh battery is also very powerful. It supplies enough juice to run the vacuum for an hour and 40 minutes before requiring a recharge. This is enough for the majority of homes. If it’s not, you don’t need to worry. The vacuum will automatically return to the charging station when the battery starts to get low. It recharges in about 90 minutes, so you can run it several times a day if you need to. Of course, if space is limited, you’re not obligated to use the charging base. You can also plug the vacuum into the charging station’s DC charger. In this case, you’ll need to manually take care of charging yourself. The Roomba i3+ EVO is a top choice for anyone looking to upgrade from a standard robot vacuum to one with self-emptying abilities. If you're tired of manually emptying your current bot's bursting dustbin on the daily, the Roomba i3+ EVO will eliminate that chore. It's a particularly compelling option if you suffer from allergies, because it also uses a high-efficiency filter to capture allergens as it cleans. However, it’s easy to use and its battery lasts for up to 150 minutes.Mop attachments: As robot vacuums become more popular, we’re seeing more manufacturers build in mopping features as a way to set their robots apart. These use a small water reservoir with a cleaning pad attached to the bottom that drags around the floor as the robot makes its way around your room. You’ll still need to use a proper mop to get stubborn stains off, though: a mopping robot is only good for cleaning up light dirt and dust from hard floors. Next, you need to consider suction power. Typically expressed in pascals (Pa), this is a measurement of how powerful the motor is inside a robot vacuum. A good number to look for here is around 2,000Pa or above for an effective clean. Although most robot vacuums look the same from the outside, they deliver vastly different levels of cleaning performance. And this is affected by a number of different factors. Probably the most important aspect is brush configuration. We didn’t expect to love the affordable Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 as much as we did, but this hybrid vacuum outperforms other robot vacuums in key ways. First, this two-in-one is the rare robot vacuum that’s equally good at mopping and vacuuming. Instead of simply using water and a mop pad to clean your floors, the AI Ultra uses a Shark cleaning solution and sonic scrubbing, and as a result, it offers a deeper clean than similarly-priced robot vacuums. Finally, we test how easy it is to set up, program, and control the robot. Some require only an initial battery charge, while others ask you to install side brushes and batteries. For connected bots, app design and reliable Bluetooth or Wi-Fi are major factors that impact your experience. As you’d expect from iRobot’s highest-end model, it’s not cheap (although worth noting it is currently on offer), and it wasn’t any faster than either of the other machines we tested from the brand. It can only be controlled via the app, but we found it clear to use, allowing you to set no-go zones, create cleaning schedules and look over the battery life and cleaning history.The cheaper versions run to a random cleaning pattern and bump around your rooms blindly, cleaning as they go. This works up to a point but it can take a while for these types of vacuum to finish cleaning a room and, although they do their best to cover all the floor, they often miss spots here and there. On the subject of its brushes, they were notably powerful. This meant that while it lifted 95% of dust in our flooring tests, when left to its own devices cleaning a whole room, the brushes tended to disperse the dust somewhat rather than drawing it all in.
