The viewfinder according to the manual is a Reverse-Galilean Albada-type bright frame viewfinder (what a mouthful! I love the little focus indicator at the bottom of the viewfinder, it is heaps more fun that a boring green light for focus. Thanks to your generosity, I can continue creating content that celebrates the beauty of life and inspires others to embrace it. I could likely debate with anyone that it’s the only point-and-shoot camera that anyone really needs.

I am a bit of a control freak when it comes to shooting film, but having a little bit of experience with 1980s auto focus plastic cameras, I felt more prepared to just trust that the camera would handle everything with little to no input from me. A point-and-shoot 35mm film camera, it’s made to point and shoot, and automation dominates its core design. Nikon came to the automatic compact camera market quite late compared to most the other manufacturers. Nikon went big with this lens, in the sense that they used some of their tried and trusted techniques, dipping into their strengths.

Again, this is too cumbersome, especially considering the ease of use found in Nikon’s half-press method. ALl these images were shot on a roll of Ilford HP5 which I rated at 1000 and if I remember correctly (it was over a year ago - get lost) I think I developed these in rodinal in a semi stand process 1:100 for 1 hour. The original Nikon L35AF from 1983 was Nikon’s first attempt at a fully automatic auto focus point and shoot camera. The Nikon AF3 is now the third all plastic point and shoot autofocus camera from the late 70s/early 80s in my collection and the second that was gifted to me. Users who are sticklers might prefer to adhere to the manual’s advice and use the manual focus mode.

It is not unusual for people to find these for sale for 99 cents or even free, making these cameras one of the best bargains of any camera ever made. This can be a little annoying, but it beats using a flash when trying to achieve naturally lit, low-light images.The camera was fully automatic and offered no manual control, but it maintained Nikon’s excellent reputation and consistently received rave reviews about the quality of the images it made. The camera weighs a scant 280 grams without any film or battery, and 318 grams with the battery, but still no film.

There’s also a vibrant red circle around the lens and some exotic Japanese text on the back of the flash unit. For that visually pleasing, yet imperfect “analogue” look, collectors of mechanical rangefinder cameras, like myself, can pay dearly for Leica and L39 mount glass based on similar lens designs.

lens is a very well regarded and highly sought after design – Nikon built this tiny little camera around an exceptional piece of glass. The camera uses a near-infrared emitting diode, a pin photo diode (whatever that is) and some kind of sorcery to triangulate the distance to the subject. Releasing the shutter release button before the camera has cycled through a long exposure will cancel the exposure and close the shutter prematurely, resulting in an under-exposed shot.That said I like the size for shooting, the grip fits my hand well, also the whole thing has more heft than you might think at first glance. This can be annoying if the film wasn’t loaded properly leading to the fumbling action of opening the door, re-aligning the leader, and closing it — instead of taking a picture.
