One of my favorite aspects of the game comes from watching other battle over an asset not just because it’s fun to watch players agonize over whether or not they are going to keep using valuable cards to steal or keep it, but because of what happens after. I'm not sure what sort of lesson this teaches my kids about how wealth works, but maybe at least they'll get some practice with their addition. Create stacks of assets by pairing sets of asset cards, like Piggy Banks, Cash Under the Mattress, Jewels, Classic Autos, and more. Each round only takes about 10 minutes or so, with a whole game taking around 30 minutes for someone to hit a million bucks.

It helps if you play while putting on posh accents and laughing evilly, as I assume the idle rich tend to do. A pair of the same asset or an asset with a gold or silver (wild cards) allows you to lay down the pair in front of you.Every time somebody tries to steal assets, whether they're successful or not, that particular set of assets increases in value, making it a bigger target for all the other players. The decision space is limited enough that downtime doesn’t increase a ton, and also you can get robbed by any player at any time, so there’s still stuff happening even when it isn’t your turn.

I have found Cover Your Assets to be fun for a short while but not one that I will be rushing back to play over and over again. Everything is done very professionally with this company and always lets you know every step of the process. You can get all of your stuff stolen by other players without much of a way to defend yourself, so if everyone decides that you’re losing this round, you’re most likely losing this round.

And you can always tell who has a matching card in their hand by the glint they get in their eyes knowing that they may have a good chance to swipe that asset from a battle weary opponent. Right now they’re just kind of played straight, and that’s fine, but I’d love to see something a bit more whimsical. I appreciate the fact that the game includes advanced rules and the changes for two or three players. The top set of assets in your pile is vulnerable, and can be stolen by other players if they show you a matching asset card, or wild (which are Silver and Gold cards) from their hand.If the top card of the discard pile matches a card from your hand, you may take it and play the pair in your asset pile.
