About this deal

In true New Art Club style, the performance sees dance, physical theatre, and comedy combine to capture the audience's imaginations, moving effortlessly from silliness through to punching us in the gut with heartfelt, sometimes painful truths. Cupid's Revenge touches on big ideas from evolution right through to Kerplunk and makes the fleeting act of holding hands the most perfect gesture of love. I realize this is a mixed bag - some will enjoy, some will dislike her and thus have less of a good time with the book. I think it's worth the risk to try it out, also because the book does my favourite thing and provides a marvellous larger cast of individually great characters. The author so pins down their personalities and offers wonderful interactions and situation comedy. Also nice to see that a book actually covers the corona pandemic.

Lastly, I loved all the fanfiction talk. It was so funny when Teddy mentioned about how fanfiction dynamics worked and also his love for Care Bears.Ha ha, hilarious, Tilly, I’m finally a joke even to you,” he said, and led me into their narrow front room. “I thought you’d be really pleased at me making a conscious effort to move on from Grace.”

I do think that some things are rushed and not narrated thoroughly to the best effect, espeically at the end and when Tilly tells people she and Katherine had sex, everyone thinks Katherine must be lesbian, it's such a case of bi erasure to not even consider bisexuality, even though it's a relatively queer crowd and that Tilly literally outs her is, though called out, not treated seriously enough. However, I really didn’t like the miscommunication. It is one of my many pet peeves within books… and so much drama could have been avoided if there was just some communication. There were some moments where I wanted to go into the book itself and shake some sense into the characters.

Hell and damnation,” Teddy panic-whispered, and turned around on the spot for no reason. “And you have to call me Theodore.” The relationships, be them romantic, familial or platonic, were the real highlight of Cupid's Revenge, and it showed so much throughout the story just how important these connections are, especially during the hardest moments. Thanks to NetGalley and Farrar, Straus, and Giroux for an advanced copy of Cupid’s Revenge by Wibke Brueggemann to review! I am officially into reviewing 2024 books, which feels both weird and exciting. And it looks like there are some great books coming out this January you’ll want to keep your eyes on! Tilly is dragged to a play so her best friend can impress a girl he has a crush on. With a family full of creatives, her parents, her sister, and even her Grandad who just recently moved in with them due to health issues, Tilly was the odd one out, the boring one who had nothing to do—at least in her family's eyes.
