About this deal

The canine restraint was dynamically tested under the conditions outlined in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 Child Restraint Systems (FMVSS 213). The canine restraint was installed on the canine crash test mannequin per the manufacturer’s (Ruffwear) instructions and then secured to the test bench restraint system. FMVSS 213 employs a standard bench seat that represents the rear seating environment of an automobile. The seat bench and add on restraint was then subjected to the 30 mph generic frontal crash pulse detailed in FMVSS 213. A pawticularly pleasing aspect of this harness’ design is the deep breastplate. If you have a deeper chested dog such as a whippet, greyhound, Visla, or Weimaranar, it can be difficult to find a harness that fits, let alone a safety harness! However, this Bergan auto harness could be just what your deep-chested dog needs.

Particular focus is given to the central chest protector, where there would be the maximum impact in the event of an incident. It has been designed in an X shape, which is unique and will prevent the harness from moving when your dog is active. of owners do not restrain their dogs with a harness whilst in the car and a quarter admitted to finding them a distraction. 10% said they had to take their hand off the wheel to restrain their doggy passengers. There's a legal obligation for dogs to travel safely and the Dogs Trust advises they are not in the front of the car. Are harnesses bad for dogs? Only a few car harnesses have been crash-test certified by the Centre for Pet Safety. Owning a crash-tested dog harness may give you extra peace of mind that the harness will hold up in the event of a crash. Expect a crash-tested harness to be at the higher end of the price range.

Unlike with a walking harness, their weight is not a concern here, so the right harness for your dog on a lead may not be secure enough for them in the car. Seatbelt Fastening Look for harnesses that are available in the appropriate sizes. Unfortunately, some of the best car harnesses for dogs are only made in sizes suitable for small dogs. Big dogs are at just as much risk of injury during an accident (and, as explained previously, they represent more of a danger to you), so a good harness is just as important for them as it is their smaller counterparts. Also, remember that a car harness won’t protect your seats. If you’re worried about upholstery or leather getting scratched, consider getting a car seat cover too. The Bergan auto harness for dogs is tested to ensure the construction and materials won’t fail in the event of a crash. However, additional independent testing showed it not to be as reliable for dogs weighing over 34 kg (75lb) as those below. Whilst this means medium-sized dogs are taken care of, it isn’t great news for their bigger brothers.

But while car rides are usually fun for dogs and their drivers, few people understand that four-legged passengers can make driving much more dangerous than normal (and, let’s face it – driving is pretty hazardous in even the best of circumstances). As mentioned, we do include one harness that doesn’t quite live up to the standards we’d prefer, but we do so only because we wanted to include an affordable option for cash-strapped owners.Either use a fabric tape measure or if you don’t have one, a piece of string works. If you have a ‘wriggler’ then get some help, fit their collar first to hold onto and if you're still struggling use some dog treats.
