About this deal

With an indicator light to the left and a built-in speaker to the right of this thumb dip, below we find a pairing of buttons for earmarking images for direct print via a PictBridge enabled device and a dedicated playback/review button respectively. I can shoot for a week, using my S90 as my only camera, and fill only half of a 4GB card with thousands of great images. Distortion correction is becoming significantly more common, though, and it's hard to argue with the excellent results.

The Canon S90's lens reminds me of one feature that hasn't come back to the Canon G-series, because its maximum aperture is f/2. Macro is a full-frame L-mount lens that's designed to be a medium telephoto, portrait and macro lens all-in-one. There is also an Auto mode that is pretty much Canon's reliable scene-recognizing Smart Auto feature. The Canon PowerShot G series (as of June 2010 [update], the G11) are similar in terms of target market, but feature a larger body and slower optics at the wide angle end.If you enjoyed this review, feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of this page and also be sure to join me on twitter or facebook! The Canon PowerShot S90 handled chromatic aberrations very well during the review, with limited purple fringing present around the edges of objects in high-contrast situations, as shown in the example below. In terms of total score, you'll get a good idea of how well a sensor will perform when compared to other cameras. And the good news is that the Canon S90 does deliver better performance in low light, and its optical quality is impressive relative to the camera's size. Though Imatest tells us that the Canon S90 has over 8 stops of dynamic range, I found the highlights were too often blown.

This is a selection of sample images from the Canon PowerShot S90 camera, which were all taken using the 10 megapixel Fine JPEG setting. Had Canon included this nigh ubiquitous functionality the little S90 might have had it all - on paper at least. In the default of FADE, you have to wait for the stupid animation to do a crossfade each time you select a different image. DPReview readers have spoken: after two rounds of voting, it's time to announce the winner of our 2023 Reader's Choice Product of the Year award, along with a couple of honorable mentions.

If I then switch to Shutter priority (Tv) mode, the function of the ring changes to adjusting the shutter speed. Reproduction in whole or part in any form or medium without specific written permission is prohibited. The last mode lets you assign a frequently used set of shooting options and settings to the C position on the mode dial. Functions are attributed to a twist of the ring in conjunction with a press of the lozenge shaped ‘ring function' button recessed into the camera's top plate. I find its 28-105mm lens range adequate for most shots, but of course prefer the G series 28-140mm range, or, S120's 24-120mm range more. The CB-2LY folding-plug charger works on 100-240 VAC and 50-60 cycles, so with the correct passive plug adapter, it works anyplace on earth. For the photographer that never wants to miss an opportunity, the S90 is the high quality camera that you can carry every day. According to my printed tests, Panasonic's approach works better for printing straight from the camera, but Canon's approach leaves the photographer more options. If you change the WB and exposure and ISO for a shot, instead of having to reset all three for the next shot, simply flick the dial away from and back to C. The S90's photo quality is on par with the best PowerShots, too, which is to say generally excellent.
