About this deal

There’s no point spending time on the controls as we’ve already covered them, so let’s look at the graphics.

This content may be purchased by users who have registered a Nintendo Account and accepted the respective legal terms. Of course there is a button to recenter your aim but here is where the real problem with the controls lies for me. The game was released in 2019, it’s 2021 at the time of this review so I hold little hope the developer will revisit this now which is a shame. The reticle feels floaty on screen compared to the movement of the controller and suffers severely from drift. The reticle was either pinned to the top and bottom of the screen with next to no room for movement on screen to aim rendering the game completely unplayable. The characters are slightly animated, but they are supposed to represent wooden boards – when you shoot them, they explode in fragments, and it’s pretty effective. When you start, you’re shooting outlaws and the odd stray chicken, but as you progress through the 60 different levels, you’ll begin to encounter more absurd things to shoot – most of which will be objects like barrels that award you with points or helps to complete a challenge like hit so many crates or bullets out of the sky, but pretty early in the game, you’ll shoot piranhas mid-air.

When I say ‘automated’, I mean where you don’t have direct control of your character other than the aim. In this case, it shines as you point the joy-con at the screen and hit ZR to fire, R to reload (it’s mirrored if you do a two-player). It’s especially disappointing as there appears to be a really decent game locked behind the controls. There isn’t any retro pixel art, 3D models or cel shading, just static images, or cut-outs if you like, of various rogues and innocent bystanders that you aren’t supposed to shoot. You can literally plug a mouse into the switch and use it, and it has a touch screen, however the controls are solely restricted to motion controls only with Joycon on the Switch version.Everything from the later 3D releases such as Virtual Cop to the to the classics like Operation Wolf. It’s in a first-person perspective, similar to games like Lethal Enforcers where it’s like you’re on a conveyor belt, only without the duck and cover mechanic.

The game sees you blasting your way through 60 levels, 200 secondary objectives, all the while taking down the Wild West’s most wanted. The positives I can give is the the game looks and sounds great, there is some good variety in the levels, and assuming you are not playing a Switch Lite, you have two joycons which allows you to play two player without the need for extra accessories. Because there are a lot of innocent bystanders amongst the crowd, you’ll find that they are all differentiated by a colour outline to indicate their threat level. We aren’t spoilt for choice with this type of game on the Switch, let alone other platforms, but regardless, this is a title definitely worth playing, and I think it takes the mantle of light gun games for me until Sega Ages attempt a H ouse of the Dead 2 port.Shooting crates and barrels can unearth a few different power-ups or collectables such as the death bomb, multiplier bonus and gold coins.

As a dusty gamer with heritage, it was quite refreshing to play Mad Bullets as it’s essentially a light gun game. After your payment has been processed, the content will be downloaded to the applicable system linked to your Nintendo Account, or your Nintendo Network ID in the case of Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family systems. However, I wanted to use the home button to check something quickly when I realised that the left Joy-Con doesn’t have that option. Not only that but each level has secondary objectives to complete such as shooting 8 incoming bullets, shooting 15 crates or boxes or shooting a certain number of enemies. They are purely optional as you can progress regardless, but it adds a level of competitiveness with a chum.Oh, I forgot to mention that there are 3 locations, 60 levels, 3 minigames, about 200 missions, trendy dubstep music, fully destroyable environmental objects, all mixed in a frantic shooter.
