About this deal

Evan stared at the pool of vodka puddled on the bar between his hands. Then up at the bartender, a pale Nordic towhead. “Would you like to talk to them?” Evan said. “Or should I?” A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy.

Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Macmillan Audio for providing me with complimentary electronic copies of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. The eighth book in the series and much better than number seven, thank goodness. From the title which uses the word 'last' and the return to the obsession with vodka (like the first book) I wondered if this was going to be the final book in the series, but it ends in a cliff hanger so........maybe not. Smashed between the two groups, Evan hunkered further into himself and took another sip. He loved drinking. The Last Orphan is pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, and thought-provoking. I loved it Meg Gardiner, No. 1 New York Times bestselling author

Need Help?

The Last Orphan is another well-crafted book. The story in Southampton was good but didn't stand out compared to some previous ones. I enjoy Evan's interaction with his inner circle more in this book. As a badass assassin, you can feel how nervous he is being around ordinary people like his 10-year-old neighbor, Peter. I love how Joey's attitude and personality drive him crazy and vice versa. Dog, the dog. It's nice to see old friends again, Tommy and Candy! As I progressed through the series I became more and more invested in these characters, and this installment plays upon those feelings. X is finally caught, and now, instead of the promised retaliation from his captors, he is given an impossible task. Will X's commitment to his personal moral code be sorely tested? Yes. Will he emerge triumphant? You'll have to read this to find out! In this installment, Even starts to view himself as growing older and perhaps not the killing machine he once was. We also see his growing attachment for Joey and hers for him. They try to hide it but they are starting to feel hope that a loving relationship is developing. I want to see where Mr Hurwitz takes us next on this perilous journey with Evan Smoek. The motivation for Smoak to do as he’s told is supposedly the promise of a pardon from the President. This is no motivation. Instead, the fire that’s lit underneath him comes from the deaths of two people who had attended a party at Luke Devine’s mansion. This, followed by a threat to Ruby, the sister of one of the people killed to stay quiet or face the consequences, is exactly the type of thing that puts Orphan X in motion. This means we have the opportunity of meeting all of the various allies and friends who have helped him out through the course of the previous 7 books. While this is a nice type of a reunion it tends to let the air out of his tyres somewhat.

As usual this “case” wraps up, but I wonder over a new character and how they might play into future stories. As a crafter of wham-bam action and suspense, leavened with a healthy dose of humour, Hurwitz's abilities are as fine-tuned as ever' DAILY EXPRESS On Evan’s other side, the footballers were stomping their feet now and chanting a drinking song. But his ear was tuned to the tale being spun by the onetime member of Sérsveit Ríkislögreglustjórans. When he is captured, the president offers him a deal, and that is to eliminate a powerful ultra wealthy man and the action and Even moves to the very rich sands of Southampton, New York. Evan through his wills and of course with a little help from his friends (hi Joey, Dog, and Orphan V), get into the high tech ultra guarded mansion and meets this man who becomes his nemesis. On the way there are a few scuffles with henchmen of course! Orphan X's mantra of doing no harm, unless a person deserves punishment, is put to the test in this one. There are some intriguing developments concerning certain plot lines, but the most significant is that Evan is not as sharp as he once was, which was an interesting change. Joey, Dog, and Orphan V were the highlights for me. Mia’s fate is revealed, but there is not enough of Peter and some of the other regular characters. This installment felt a little tired. I feel like the series needs a reboot, which maybe is what Hurwitz is hinting at with Evan’s unexpected challenges. I have no idea where this series will go next, but I look forward to finding out. The Last Orphan is the eighth book in the Orphan X series by best-selling American author, Gregg Hurwitz. Two months after his neighbour and sometime lover, Mia Hall is left in a coma, Evan Smoak is on a glacier in Iceland, tasting his favourite tipple, and dealing with some obnoxious locals. The Nowhere Man.’ It’s said that he left the world of spycraft. But he’s still around. In the shadows.”

The most richly accomplished of the brothers’ pairings to date—and given Connelly’s high standards, that’s saying a lot. Well, there’s a lesser-known spa an hour east of Akureyri. We pride ourselves on low crime here, but an enterprise was taking advantage of our goodwill, using us as a transport from the EU to North America. Meth. Significant loads out of Dresden.” What was the funniest thing you ever saw on the job?” The Australians gathered closer around the cop now, indulging him. Encounters with two of Devine’s ex-marines have ended fatally (for the marines), but when he enters Devine’s home, he is eventually chatting with a man who rationalises his every move and casts serious doubt on Donahue-Carr’s motives. Does Evan begin to second-guess his own convictions about the man? There is simply no one writing thrillers like Gregg Hurwitz. He’s a beautiful writer who dives deep into character but never takes his foot off the gas when it comes to action and suspense. If you haven’t read Gregg Hurwitz, you’re missing out.” —Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of The New Couple in 5B A stellar series, and the stories get better with each instalment. [Evan Smoak is] the man you want in your corner when justice is needed Daily Mail In a show of aggressive amusement, one of the footballers pounded his fist into the bar, sending a glass ashtray flipping up past Evan’s cheek. It shattered at the ground near his boots. In the past Evan has been mostly on his own, but gradually he’s collected a sort of family, people he cares about and who he can count on. Joey, Tommy, Mia and even (gasp!) Candy! Going from a mostly lonely existence to inadvertently and reluctantly adding these people to his life has been heartwarming!
