Based on which color of leaves you’re trying to expand the most, you may never get that perfect tile to complete that section. Add in that it’s quick to play and easy to score, and I think you’ll find that this is an easy game to get to the table and the exact right kind of game for players to just want to play over and over (and I’ve indeed experienced this effect). It perfectly captures that feeling of your bag still not coming out at the airport baggage claim; the more tiles you see that aren’t the one you want, the more nervous you’ll get until you either are happy or very sad.

I do wish that there were more bags included in the game for storage, but it was not a huge deal because we just added our own to the game. Starting with the player who holds the Green Tree token (the first time this will always be the Architect) each player selects a tree to add to their forest. You must bear that in mind whilst placing your tiles, particularly towards the end of the game, when tree varieties may be running low. A game of Legendary Forests ends as soon as all players have placed their 19th tile (when the Architect runs out of tiles) and scoring commences. Set-up includes each player selecting a unique colored set of 25 tiles, laying out the tile numbered 1, and choosing a player to serve as the Architect.

Light on Strategy Needed for the Win – Individual tile placement is key and one can keep track of the tiles not yet drawn to understand how best to place the current tile. These monuments are in the same three colors of leaves based on three different tree varieties; pink cherry blossom, red maple, and yellow ginko. That’s not really strategic, unless you’re going to try to argue that they should have planned ahead better.

That’s kind of what makes the game interesting, to me, but I can see this being a bit frustrating for other players, as with similar skill levels / building types, the game may come down to one tile or one tree poorly placed. Once everyone knows how to play you can probably burn through games rapid fire, which would be awesome. If the chosen tile number happens to be one with a light background (scoring tile), that triggers selection of tree tokens. This is a great gateway game to introduce non-gamers to the wonderful world of more complex board games. That being said, one thing I love about Legendary Forests that I do not see in most tile placement games is the consistency between players’ tiles.
