About this deal

The book did give me much hope that this rise in single-person households may hold great potential for our societies, more than enough to offset the downsides typically discussed--and that, like it or not, it's here to stay, so maybe we should stop building cities and suburbs primarily for nuclear families. this book also did something that is REALLY starting to annoy the piss out of me, in that in routinely conflated people that legally "single" (in that they are not married) with people that are single (as in, not in a relationship). there are over 6 million cohabiting unmarried couples in the united states, & together, they are raising over two million children. that's a pretty small fraction of all couples in the united states, full stop, but it still gets really annoying to see "unmarried" so often assumed to be synonymous with "single". urn:lcp:goingsolo000dahl:epub:ecc1beff-419c-4e07-9b5e-2dffaf1694c9 Extramarc OhioLINK Library Catalog Foldoutcount 0 Identifier goingsolo000dahl Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t5gb34r2k Isbn 9780140103069 Klinenberg explores the dramatic rise of solo living, and examines the seismic impact it’s having on our culture, business, and politics. Though conventional wisdom tells us that living by oneself leads to loneliness and isolation, Klinenberg shows that most solo dwellers are deeply engaged in social and civic life. In fact, compared with their married counterparts, they are more likely to eat out and exercise, go to art and music classes, attend public events and lectures, and volunteer. There’s even evidence that people who live alone enjoy better mental health than unmarried people who live with others and have more environmentally sustainable lifestyles than families, since they favor urban apartments over large suburban homes. Drawing on over three hundred in-depth interviews with men and women of all ages and every class, Klinenberg reaches a startling conclusion: in a world of ubiquitous media and hyperconnectivity, this way of life can help us discover ourselves and appreciate the pleasure of good company.

When your business relies on you and you alone, it’s much easier to take your work with you and work from anywhere. Solopreneurs—especially those who work online—have the freedom to become digital nomads as their businesses often aren’t tied to a particular location. We would also like to send you exclusive promotions, competitions and content from The Times and Sunday Times and selected partners. Solopreneurs will also usually have a singular focus. Their business caters to a specific niche. Or they typically offer a single service to clients. Conversely, entrepreneurs typically run businesses that may focus on multiple niches or services. They employ teams to help with these different areas. Start by taking a good look at your existing skillset. Identify skills that are not only interesting to you but also in high demand. Some popular freelance business options include: Dahl first began writing short stories for adults that were extremely popular in America and it was only in 1961 that he wrote James and the Giant Peach. In his lifetime, his children’s books were hated by some librarians, but Dahl knew his audience: ‘a grown-up talking about a children’s book is like a man talking about a woman’s hat’.

The best books, imho, invite the reader to look more into their subject, and that's what I felt as I'd reached the end of Going Solo. If you like to write or are an expert in a particular niche—professional blogging may be the perfect business choice for you. Note that most bloggers don’t generate income straightaway. It can take months or years to generate traffic and build up a community. So if you choose to start a blog to make money, know that you must be in it for the long haul to see results. Together we navigate through relationship loss/divorce, divorce recovery, transition into single parenthood, supporting our children in a positive way, dating as single parents and adjusting our families as we continue to walk together in the struggles of life. All while enjoying our life of parenting our children and being the "BEST" Dads we can be. Two stars for the outright lie-there is no surprising appeal of living alone. I read this hoping to find some validation in my situation of being unmarried, single and alone-not by choice but because I HAD NO CHOICE! Unless I want to lose my virginity in a cohabitating relationtionship, I'm doomed to live the celebite life alone and I guess I'm just the first to admit there are some days I do not find it appealing. It's a weak argument that having a spouse and children is important but, as Klinenberg keeps pointing out in his book, not that important. We're in big trouble, folks. A revelatory examination of the most significant demographic shift since the Baby Boom - the sharp increase in the number of people who live alone - that offers surprising insights on the benefits of this epochal change. In 1950, only 22 percent of American adults were single. Today, more than 50 percent of American adults are single, and 31 million, roughly one out of every seven adults, live alone. People who live alone make up 28 percent of all U.S. households, which makes them more common than any other domestic unit, including the nuclear family. In Going Solo, renowned sociologist and author Eric Klinenberg proves that these numbers are more than just a passing trend. They are, in fact, evidence of the biggest demographic shift since the Baby Boom: we are learning to go solo, and crafting new ways of living in the process.

Information on identifying editions is from Richard Walker’s “Roald Dahl – A Guide to Collecting His First Editions”.The extraordinary rise of living alone is not in itself a social problem. But it is a dramatic social change thats already exacerbating serious problems for which there are no easy solutions: Social isolation for the elderly and frail. Reclusiveness for the poor and vulnerable. Self-doubt for those who worry that going solo will leave them childless, or unhappy, or alone.” They did not think for one moment that they would find anything but a burnt-out fuselage and a charred skeleton, and they were astounded when they came upon my still-breathing body lying in the sand nearby.’ After you do your basic homework and research, consider your business idea good to go.
