About this deal

If you're on a budget you are much better off putting more money into a good wetsuit and economising on the wetsuit boots and gloves. Not every winter swell will present perfectly peeling ocean mountains rolling into shore. There will still be plenty of small days where surfing seems off the schedule. The important thing is not to waste the smaller days by sitting on the beach waiting for giants. If you’re looking for a thrilling surf and yoga experience in a tropical destination, thisaffordable surf camp promises theperfect beach holiday. We also recommend wearing a hooded vest, especially if you own a wetsuit without a head, like this one.

Avoid changing huddled behind the open car door or behind a towel, as this won’t offer wind protection. Small winter days can deliver punchy, fast-moving waves that are ideal for getting speed into your turns and improving your own ability as a surfer. These are the days to cut your teeth in preparation for the bigger swells. Less psychologically challenging, but still powerful enough to surpass much of what summer delivers, the small winter swell is a perfectly primed training ground. We suggest water temperatures anything lower than 11°C – 14°C / 51°F- 58°F. Of course, it depends on weather conditions, the local break and your own sensitivity to the cold. A water temperature of 50 °F (10 °C) or less can be very dangerous and cause hypothermia. How do you stay warm in a wetsuit? The ultimate guide to wetsuits for chilly waters, we take a look at some of the best neoprene available today. Known as the ‘Brazil of Europe’, Portugal is a surfing mecca. Why? Follow these tips and surfing is possible - and enjoyable - all year round in the UK, and, says Stoy, it is well worth it. We caught up with George Stoy, Founder of George’s Surf School, recently rated as one of the top 10 surf schools in the world, to get his top tips for surfing in the winter months. Wetsuits do keep you warm Your wetsuit is only adequate if it’s a snug, shape-hugging fit. This ensures the warmer water inside your wetsuit doesn’t mix with the colder water from the ocean outside, cooling you down. If you have ever surfed in cold water and pondered how these waves seem heavier than those warm water ones, well, you’d be exactly right. If you're a UK south coast surfer you can get a good 5mm wetsuit to see you through the year, you’ll need boots , glovesand a hoodfor the colder months.

Additional features include the Xtend 2.0 interior lining which considerably speeds up drying times alongside carefully placed seams designed to not limit your mobility. Flexibility is handled by their Ultra Stretch IR, stretchy neoprene that’s not going to slow you down through manoeuvres on the wave. One of the best things to fight cold weather is a nice hot cup of something to drink. Pre-session coffee does wonders, but it’s the post-session hot beverage that truly warms you up. For most people, getting a hot drink to warm up means swinging by the coffee shop on the way out. With the Yeti Rambler Tumbler, there’s no need to go anywhere else and wait after a surf. You can immediately start thawing yourself out with your drink of choice that will stay warm through your session. This Rambler Tumbler holds 30oz which is enough to have some sips before you paddle out and still leave enough to warm you up when you get out. Plus, the Yeti Rambler will keep any drink warm, or cold during the summer, while you surf to your heart’s content.

Dive in, the water’s fine…

Once you enter the water, it’s important to maintain your body temperature for as long as possible. Keep yourself active in the water to feel more comfortable and extend the length of time you can spend surfing. Paddle all the waves you can and don’t stay still for too long. Why is the surf better in winter? You can counteract this by being prepared. Train the mind and body for winter surfing. Understand that the hold downs might feel more intense, but in reality, it is likely to be partly mind games. And, make sure you don’t push your physical limits. With the body working harder to keep the temperature up, you will tire faster. Think of winter sessions as short bursts of wonderful icy waves where quality surpasses quantity. Not everyone wants to spend lots of money on a new suit, enter the Xcel Axis, one of the best value wetsuits you can find online. With great weather and surf conditions all year round, the prime time to surf in Portugal is between October and April. This time of year means big, powerful waves. Unfortunately, it also means cold water, so get ready to strap on your wetsuit. The average water temperature in December stays around 59°F (15°C) . But look at the bright side – that mulled wine after a surf session will have never tasted as good. The E6 Flash Lining provides incredible stretch and flexibility making for ultimate movement and comfort in the water.

One of our favourite features on the Billabong Furnace is the SMART Foam limestone-based neoprene made with 30% recycled car tires, scrap rubber & oyster shells. Sri Lanka is a swell magnet. The water is always warm and the waves are not too aggressive, which makes the country a great destination for those learning to surf or progress on green waves. That being said, there are a few surf spots that even advanced surfers will find challenging. Poorly fitting wetsuits are close to useless. You might as well be wearing nothing because they can’t keep you warm by trapping the insulated layer of water you need. Protection from the wind Sri Lanka has two distinct surfing seasons. The west coast gets clean and reliable waves during the dry season, between November and April. The west coast fires up between May and October. You can surf on the south coast of Sri Lanka all year round, as it benefits from whichever swell hits either coast. The water temperatureaverages around81ºF (27ºC), and there are over 330 days of sunshine a year. The Hawaii Islands are exposed to a 360-degree swell window, which makes surfing possible all year round. That said, the surf conditions are different on the south shores compared to the northern ones.It may be the most expensive option, but because the life expectancy of a wetsuit is based on how much it is used, each suit will last you much longer (providing you clean and store them properly!), so the cost balances out over time. Medium budget However, science is not the only reason the waves feel heavier. We also need to consider the human mind and body. Water conducts heat away from the body 25 times faster than air. What this means for the winter surf is that it can become physically demanding in ways a warm water session might not. It is energy sapping, meaning of course that when the hold downs come, they can feel heightened due to your own levels of tiredness and dipping energy reserves. This means wetsuits can range anywhere from 1mm up to 10mm for custom scuba diving wetsuits. For surfing, you’ll still get up to the 6mm range for surfing frozen coasts like Norway or Ireland in the depths of winter. Proper fit The Wired range is the top offering from C-Skins. Featuring lots of extras that enhance warmth and flexibility.
