I can’t help but feel that adding some animal meeples for this purpose would have really helped bring zoos to life – especially as the game already divides its critters up into seven handy categories. During each turn, players can play an action card. The position of the card (1-5) defines the effect of the action played (“strength”). For example, a BUILD card played at strength 1 allows a player to build a 1-space enclosure while playing it at strength 5 allows you to build a 5-space enclosure. All cards are used at their base level (blue side) at the beginning of the game but they could be upgraded to their red side during the game to become more efficient. In addition, you could use X-tokens to increase the strength of an action up to 5. One last point of note: each player can only have one association worker per slot on the association board. Unbox Ark Nova and you’ll likely be greeted by one thought: the artwork and components are stunning. Every card features captivating artwork – I still descend into paroxysms of cute aggression every time I encounter the slumbering fennec fox or floofy alpaca. And while the images aren’t as unique as Wingspan’s inimitable avian illustrations, they do create the feeling of populating a vibrant, three-dimensional zoo. Overall the setup is pretty straightforward and it starts by placing the main game board in the centre of the table. If this is your first game or the first time you play it on a different table, I recommend placing next to the player’s boards (zoo maps) and the 5 action cards below the action spaces. This should allow you to assess if you have enough space to properly set up all areas without risking having to move all the boards once all the game pieces are already on it. Ark Nova is a game centred around the development of your zoo by placing animals in enclosures, partnering with sponsors, managing your reputation, and supporting conservation projects. These mechanics are relatively simple by themselves, but they link together and interact in such a way that you will need to balance all of them and invest in them at the right time to claim the victory. I have played Ark Nova many times, and in this short post, I will attempt to share some of the things I try and do in the game and when I aim to have them done by.

Despite you being focused on your zoo there is a healthy amount of interaction through the card display and the association’s board. There are cards and advantages you will need to prioritise. There are also some cards that can have small negative impacts on the other players, but these are easily removed if those sorts of shenanigans don’t float your boat. Before even starting the game, you will probably realize that Ark Nova is one of those games that requires a lot of space on the table.

Ultimately, there’s a reason Ark Nova has been one of the hottest board games of 2022. It offers a captivating theme akin to zoo-building computer games like Planet Zoo or Zoo Tycoon, while its components are – for the most part – both pleasingly tactile and delightfully designed.Playing the card at strength 1 does not provide any benefit. Strength 2 allows players to place one of their association workers to gain 2 reputation point while strength 3 and 4 allows a player to get one partner zoo or university. Note that until a break is triggered and the board replenished, the token taken will not be available for the other players. The Association card allows you to send one of your workers to the Association Board which could provide you with partnership opportunities with Zoos from different continents, the assistance of universities, and the ability to complete conservation projects and score big points. Objective cards augment this, providing you with additional conservation points at the end of the game, should you complete their conditions. And, believe me, these are no pushover – you might need to exhibit a number of lower-scoring, smaller animals or build as many space-hungry special enclosures as you can. The end of the game is triggered when any one player's conservation and appeal markers have crossed each other, and points are gained through individual final scoring cards and victory points, the latter calculated by subtracting the appeal points [ clarification needed] from the conservation points.
