Stanislao traveled from continent to continent collecting 40 rinds, woods, seeds, rhizomes, flowers, fruits, citrus peels, roots, stems and leaves. Its strong bitter flavour is artichoke based but is enriched by a mixture of 13 different herbs, plants and roots, bringing out heady botanical aromas and flavours.

Back from his travels he experimented with countless ingredients and finally determined the ultimate blend of 40 botanicals that would make up his amaro liqueur. It is made from a secret blend of 40 botanicals, including vanilla, orange peels, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon alongside a blend of artemisia in a traditional process (boiling, maceration and distillation), relatively unchanged since 1885. Made in Bologna in 1885 by the young rebel genius Stanislao Cobianchi, Amaro Montenegro was an instant success.

It's one of the best ways to drink this Italian bitter liqueur and comes out bubbly, bittersweet, and refreshing. The ‘Premio’ is the result of the meticulous micro-distillation of 5 botanicals, just one litre of Premio for every 15,000 litres is required and is the final and fundamental ingredient of the secret recipe.Ingredients are individually selected for their quality and only the highest quality herbs made it into the final recipe. Of course they contribute bitterness but in many ways: citrus oil, vegetal/thistle, medicinal, herbal, even bitter fruits and berries.
