About this deal

While worth considering, these differences are minimized in the Wave because the ridged sides and proprietary filters are designed to keep the bed of coffee off the dripper as much as possible. The bigger factor is the design differences between the materials I already mentioned. The Price Is Definitely Right

The ceramic version has three protruding ribs meant to raise the bottom of the filter. These ribs are protruding far enough that you don’t have to worry about the filter getting dragged down to the weight of the slurry. Also, the holes are placed to the side of the ribs, which makes it even more difficult for clogging to happen. The stainless steel Kalita is very sturdy and durable and is the classic look. They work very well with either of the above mods, but without do have some issues. This model seamlessly pairs the functionality of a French Press with the convenience that comes with a coffee dripper for a full-bodied, smooth taste. Coffee extraction data from a coffee refractometer is recorded to assess any impact the brewer's design has on extraction

My personal experience brewing with these different models aligned nicely with the test results. The stainless steel version is a lot slower than its siblings. The Hario V60 uses conical filters. Available bleached on unbleached and with or without tabs, these filters are made by a number of brands, making them inexpensive and easy to find. Leading up to this experiment, I bought the bigger glass version but broke it after only two days of use.Temperature is noted at the initial temperature during bloom and peak temperature during brewing, to see if any dripper has a stable temperature advantage I like to use a pulse pouring method, which you can see Steven from Home Grounds demonstrate in this video: Clogging Issues

Winner: The Hario V60 wins by a hair because it allows you more freedom to dial in your perfect cup of coffee. Materials and Design Shortly after the Hario V60 had paved the way in specialty coffee shops around the world, attention shifted to the flat-bottomed rival.

FAQs

However, the glass version is rather fragile, so if you’re the least bit clumsy, I would avoid that model. Some people say that it’s easier to brew with a flat bottomed dripper (Kalita style) compared to the cone-shaped one, because there’s some flow restriction going on. Personally, I don’t think that’s the case at all. We tested this method both with a sifter ( Kruve) and without. Both approaches seemed to feature a prominent caramel flavor, with a slight hint of grape and a chocolaty finish. The biggest difference between sifting was seen in the mouthfeel and sweetness. The sifted cup had a lighter body and increased sweetness, while the unsifted cup was less sweet and a little more bitter. The Wave is named after the unique shape of the filter. The idea is that the filter shelters the brew bed from the cone, thus creating a more stable brew temperature and an evenly extracted brew bed.
