If you're looking for a devotional, or even just to broaden your understanding of the Bible I'd definitely recommend either The Women of the Bible Speak: The Wisdom of 16 Women and Their Lessons for Today or The Mothers and Daughters of the Bible Speak: Lessons on Faith from Nine Biblical Families :) The author also convincingly captured the range of emotions and tensions which can arise when a widowed parent begins a new relationship, only to find their happiness threatened by disapproval from adult offspring. Without introducing any spoilers by giving examples, there were moments when I found myself feeling furious with Martha’s controlling, manipulative behaviour as she attempted to derail her mother’s relationship with Ellis! I liked Bream's interpretation of David's and Bathsheba's loss of their first born son, and of David's broken heartedness. That he would go to Bathsheba, again, and for Solomon to be born of that (re)union....given the name that means "Peace." God Bless, Bathsheba, in that she made sure Solomon would "find his way to the throne" (p 132). Whilst there are some emotional issues explored in this story, I thought the ending was uplifting and optimistic. I enjoyed seeing Willow and Martha come together as sisters, and then become accepting of their mother’s decisions. Family life is emphasised in this story, but also the importance of friendship and independence. It sends some significant messages to readers about acceptance of life choices and I appreciate this moral message that James is trying to convey. Well worth the read. Through these stories, Shannon explains the intimate connection between faith and family—and how God’s unexpected agenda can redefine the way we think about family. Not all of these mothers and daughters in the Bible were paragons of virtue. Like us, they were human beings who faltered and struggled to do their best. While some heard God’s voice, others chose their own paths. Through the lens of their imperfections, we can see how God used their stories to bring about His divine plans. He’s still doing the same work in our lives today.

Growing up in a family with an elder sister I can totally relate to this story. Martha could easily be my sister and Willow could easily be me. The similarities had me shaking my head at times. I loved how the characters were so relatable and so well written. At its beating heart, it’s a story about the impact of a mother’s life on her daughter’s art. And how a daughter’s fear-ridden and ferocious desire to someday be a mother herself can fuel potentially permanent mistakes. My favorite thing about this book was breaking apart these well known stories (at least imo), and digging into these people's heads. It really gave me a greater appreciation for some of them, and cleared up questions I haven't bothered to ask (but definitely wondered). The real drama begins when we discover that Naomi, in her middle sixties, has met a man, Ellis, and is having a serious relationship with him. He has rented the house next door to Naomi by chance before discovering they were at university together. The two girls think it is far too soon for Naomi to move on and are very reluctant to meet Ellis. They think he must be a man on the make and do not know of their history. Martha in particular, having been so close to her father and being very touchy because she failed to become pregnant is particularly against the poor man.

Mothers and Daughter is both a compelling and hugely relatable family drama centred around recently widowed sixty-three-year-old Naomi and her thirty-something adult daughters, Martha and Willow, as they move forward with their lives. Just over two years ago, Naomi’s husband, Colin, and the father of both her daughters, died suddenly leaving her a widow in the Tilsham cottage the family once shared. Having rebuilt her life and reconnected by random chance with Ellis, a friend from university, Naomi is ready to start afresh but worried about both her daughter’s reaction to a new man, especially that of Martha who idolised her father. The truth of the marriage and the real man behind Colin’s bonhomie is something that Naomi has kept from both her daughters, but as Martha and Naomi each meet Ellis, they are harbouring concerns of their own.. It could've been that I hyped it up, that I'm not totally the right demographic, or that the title is a bit more misleading that I originally thought. But that isn't to say that this book didn't touch me. Although the relationship between the three women is at the heart of the story, other relationships are bought under the spotlight including marital problems, the issues facing blended families, control and abuse and deciding how much of your real self that you let others see.A lot of difficult issues are handled in a very sensitive way throughout this novel. Introducing new members into an established family can sometimes cause fractions and difficulties I thought this was brilliantly explored in the book. Family, sibling rivalry, fertility, infidelity, domestic violence, narcissism and finding happiness were a few of the subjects which were intertwined throughout the story. Raised in Pennsylvania, the protagonist of What We Lose, Thandi, views the world of her mother’s childhood in Johannesburg as both impossibly distant and ever present. She tries to connect these dislocated pieces of her life, and as her mother succumbs to cancer, Thandi searches for an anchor—someone, or something, to love. We watch Thandi’s life unfold, from losing her mother and learning to live without the person who has most profoundly shaped her existence, to her own encounters with romance and unexpected motherhood. There are also sinister doings at the medical lab where Paul works. And the vexing problem of why our heroine is named after the economist who coined the phrase “conspicuous consumption.” It all goes reasonably haywire, but as an exploration of the weight of the past on our hopes for the future, it’s provocative and sobering. We promise that you’ll never see squirrels in quite the same way again.

The novel is written in the form of an extended letter to Swiv’s father, who has gone missing with no word of goodbye. The three women, and “Gord,” the unborn child, are left to fend for themselves. The other niggle was the way one of the characters were dealt with at the end. They had become an inconvenience and it seems as though the author didn���t really know what to do with them.
