I had done a signalling course and although it bore little relationship to the job at hand, I felt myself under an obligation to the battalion. My grandfather, Hughie came from a family with strong connections to mining in South Australia and Western Australia, and the expansion of the mining trade unions. His father, Jabez Dodd eventually entered the Upper House of the Western Australian parliament and was responsible for the passing of some of the earliest workers’ compensation legislation protecting miners.

Mendes' life was fascinating in many ways, one of these being the number of famous people with whom he interacted, with CLR James and Aldous Huxley standing out among all. Nobody even bothers to remember this man anymore and that is why, for me, it is so fascinating to find that not only did he meet so many, but he became close friends with many of these men and women. But if there is one thing I value Alfred in particular, it is because he was more than many could expect, myself included. The first war only occupies two fleeting chapters in his book, taking the rest to speak in depth of the love and aspirations he had towards his greatest talent: writing.

In his interview with Deadline, Mendes explained that his grandfather had behavioral tics due to his time in the war. 'One of them was, he washed his hands incessantly. And when he did that, he washed them for a very long time. I asked my dad when I was ten or eleven: why does granddad wash for so long? He told me it was because he remembers the mud of the trenches, when he could never get clean.' Following the war, he returned to Trinidad and was employed in his wealthy father's provisions business, writing poetry and fiction on the side. In 1933, he headed to New York City where he joined literary salons and became acquainted with American writers like William Faulkner, Thomas Wolfe and William Saroyan. He returned to Trinidad in 1940, giving up writing to become a civil servant. He worked as General Manager of the Port Services Department. He was married three times; he was widowed when his first wife died of pneumonia, his second marriage ended in divorce in 1938, and he married his third wife, Ellen Parachini, in 1940 while still in New York. The marriage lasted until they both died in 1991 of natural causes while living in Barbados. Hindenburg and Ludendorff authorised the creation of a massive system of specifically prepared defences, running from Arras, west of Cambrai, down to Saint-Quentin and beyond the Somme. While the film’s protagonists are fictional, the setting of the film was based on real events. According to Mendes, the idea for 1917 came from stories that his paternal grandfather, Alfred H. Mendes, shared about his time as a Lance Corporal in the War.The film focuses on a period of time when the German army conducted Operation Alberich, which saw a major retreat from positions they had occupied into a new defensive line, known as the Hindenburg Line. Representatives for Mendes and co-screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns declined Daily Mail's requests for interviews. Only a few kilometres away from Treux, where Eric served, is the town of Corbie. On its outskirts is the field where Baron Manfred von Richthofen (aka the Red Baron) crashed and died. Controversy still exists today as to who actually shot down Richthofen on 21 April 1918 although most “experts” now suggest it was probably Sergeant Cedric Popkin a Lewis Gunner with the Australian 4th Division rather than Canadian pilot Captain Roy Brown.

It was as a runner during the British assault on Poelcappelle in October 1917 that Mendes earned the Military Medal, carrying vital messages between the companies of his battalion and the Advanced Report Centre. Having volunteered for this assignment in spite of his commanding officer’s bald admission that “there may be no return”, Mendes scurried around in search of the shell holes where the other companies might be holed up.
