About this deal

What did work -the writing was pretty good and there were some insightful passages that I marked. I loved the descriptions of Rome. However, the story and characters just didn't work for me. I'm curious as to what opinion I would have were I to read this again, now knowing how the story plays out, but I doubt I have the motivation to do that. Marsh made extensive enquiries into forensic details and Italian police procedure, with which she admitted struggling. On receipt of the manuscript in January 1970, her agent Edmund Cork wrote to her that it was her best novel to date, a verdict with which her American agent agreed. The novel was favourably received by reviewers and sold very well. [1] What a beautiful and stirring book this is. Callanan has done maybe the most impossible thing - written a book about faith, that thing we can neither hold nor see, but something he's made palpable through Claire's remarkable journey.”

When in Rome Series by Sarah Adams - Goodreads

When in Rome is a total delight. It has all my favorite things—a gorgeous setting, a fierce and funny female protagonist, and nuns! Best of all, it showcases Liam Callanan’s trademark wisdom about the human heart, and reminds us that it’s never too late to change your life.” She's in love with Marcus, but she made a secret deal with God to not be with him if God healed him after an non-existent illness. She wants to be nun and should know better, and it is mentioned in the story that she knows it's ridiculous and not how God works, yet for 30 years, she denies her and Marcus' happiness because...reasons? And it's a secret. Because of course it is. Amelia can’t resist falling for the cozy town and her grumpy tour guide, but even Audrey had to leave Rome eventually.A] sweet romantic comedy . . . This novel's scenic descriptions, food references and coffee bar stops may have the susceptible Googling flights to Italy.” From nationally bestselling, award-winning author Liam Callanan, the story of an opportunity to start over at midlife, a chance to save a struggling convent in the Eternal City, and the dramatic re-emergence of an old flame . . . Can a fifty-two year-old woman be the central character in a coming-of-age novel? In skillful hands, she can. . . . Callanan writes beautifully about the city of Rome; his prose will make many readers swoon over descriptions of food, color, street life, flowers.” When in Rome отразява нашето захващане за сламка в реалния живот. Всеки търси отдушник, търси общност и цел, за да не е сам. Да се чувства нужен, полезен, все още можещ. Все още не толкова самотен. That doesn’t prove that you’re weak or neglectful, it proves to all the women standing by and watching you pave the road to success that it’s okay to say no. It’s okay to shut your door every now and then and put up a sign that says Busy taking care of me today. Piss off.”

She can't help but pause, and so misses seeing everyone, but most especially Monica, who is, impossibly, here. Another sip, two. The foamy crema on top is so sweet she worries she's forgotten herself and put the sugar in anyway. Director Mark Steven Johnson deserves an award for wasting the talents of so many comic actors. The supporting actors are all much, much funnier in their other films, and the screenplay is so formulaic that even a fifth grader could guess what's bound to happen. Yes, Bell is adorable and Duhamel is hunky, but their looks alone can't save this utterly predictable and gag-inducing sappy story. I requested this because I was intrigued by the setting--I have a lot of fond memories of Rome--and because the premise of Claire hanging out with three nuns in a convent to figure out her relationship to religion feels unique. While the descriptions of Rome's food, culture, and beauty are compelling and lush, unfortunately, I disliked the characters. (Well, all the characters except the nuns. The nuns are hilarious, and I would love to hang out with them.)Monica shakes her head but leans in for the embrace, and when she speaks, still deep in the hug, it's muffled, because her words must work their way through so much fabric. Claire can't see everyone else yet, but she can hear Monica's question clearly. My conclusion: it has a lot of the puzzle pieces of a good novel, but they just didn't fit together.
