Matt Elliot (11 March 2019). "USB 3.2 explained: Making sense of current and confusing USB standards". CNET. Archived from the original on 7 July 2021 . Retrieved 26 July 2022. The connectors the USB committee specifies support a number of USB's underlying goals, and reflect lessons learned from the many connectors the computer industry has used. The female connector mounted on the host or device is called the receptacle, and the male connector attached to the cable is called the plug. [30] :2–5 – 2–6 The official USB specification documents also periodically define the term male to represent the plug, and female to represent the receptacle. [85] The legacy USB Type-A plug. This is one of many legacy types of USB connector. USB 1.1 launched a few years later but included a Low-Speed mode that was limited to 1.5 Megabits per second. DisplayPort cables are pretty simple - there's one type of cable and it support all the current standards but can't cover the same wide spread of capabilities like the HDMI cables. Length wise DisplayPort can have a regular 65-foot cable, for a fiber cable it can be hundreds of feet long. There are four (4) cable standards for HDMI, but they aren't often labelled correctly. Using a cable that isn't up to the job you want it to do, can be problematical. There is no maximum cable length defined for HDMI in its standards but depending on the cable type - they can carry out a wide variety of jobs. For simplicity DisplayPort wins, however for specialized multimedia jobs you'd go with the correct HDMI cable type. Video and Audio Streams A message pipe is bi-directional and is used for control transfers. Message pipes are typically used for short, simple commands to the device, and for status responses from the device, used, for example, by the bus control pipe number 0.

USB deserves more support". Business. Boston Globe Online. Simson. 31 December 1995. Archived from the original on 6 April 2012 . Retrieved 12 December 2011. Thunderbolt3 is twice as fast and uses reversible USB-C". Archived from the original on 3 June 2015 . Retrieved 2 June 2015. They really, really should have provided some way to clarify this mess but they didn't. If colors and icons with the big variety and the space constrains are not viable then provide a standard way for software to give a capability list to the user. Or a diagnostics tool that you can plug into USB-C and it gives you a list of "this port can provide signals A, B, C and accepts inputs D, E, F". Because the Just Work(TM) dream is clearly off: if you plug a USB-C cable into a monitor you do not really have any idea whether it will work or not because the monitor might require a Thunderbolt signal or just a DisplayPort signal is enough or just USB is enough because it is using DisplayLink technology in which case the host device needs a proprietary driver... The USB1.1 standard specifies that a standard cable can have a maximum length of 5 meters (16ft 5in) with devices operating at full speed (12Mbit/s), and a maximum length of 3 meters (9ft 10in) with devices operating at low speed (1.5Mbit/s). [86] [87] [88]Battery Charging v1.2 Spec and Adopters Agreement". USB.org. Archived from the original on 31 July 2019 . Retrieved 31 July 2019. The host controller directs traffic flow to devices, so no USB device can transfer any data on the bus without an explicit request from the host controller. In USB2.0, the host controller polls the bus for traffic, usually in a round-robin fashion. The throughput of each USB port is determined by the slower speed of either the USB port or the USB device connected to the port. September 2022 naming scheme [ edit ] An overview of USB naming scheme that was put in place in September 2022. Because of the previous confusing naming schemes, USB-IF decided to change it once again. As of 2 September 2022, marketing names follow the syntax "USB xGbps", where x is the speed of transfer in Gb/s. [44] Overview of the updated names and logos can be seen in the adjacent table. a b "Universal Serial Bus Device Class Specification for Device Firmware Upgrade, Version 1.1". With this article, I’ve explained pretty much everything you need to know about USB in the modern day. I hope it was all digestible and covered any questions you might’ve had! Feel free to ask more in the comments or the Forums if you’re still curious, though.

What is a computer connector?

Female USB connectors allow the male part of a USB cable or plug to be inserted into any compatible device. Once coupled in this way, the two devices can share both power and data over their common USB connection.

USB 3.0 also introduced the USB Attached SCSI protocol (UASP), which provides generally faster transfer speeds than the BOT (Bulk-Only-Transfer) protocol. However, USB 3 and its variations are still considerably slower than their Thunderbolt rivals released at the same time. More on the relationship between Thunderbolt and USB in the FAQ. While Type-C didn’t technically debut with USB 3.0, it was the first standard to prominently feature the form factor. Since Type-C’s entry into the mainstream with 3.0, it’s become the “main” version of USB, deprecating all “Mini” and “Micro” ports from 3.0 and onward.
