About this deal

I searched ahead to find out if and how Steven comes out to Freya. Freya catches him kissing a guy and then makes him give her a label, even after Steven says he doesn't really know. The story follows Steven, his best friend, Freya, her boyfriend, Marcus (who Steven isn’t so fond of) and an American student, Troy, as they’re stranded in the town with a broken down car while also being on the hunt from a strange DEMA organisation. Throughout the book Steven tries to figure out how to control his emotion caused powers with the help of a mysterious man he met in a bathroom at a greasy cafe as well as finding out who he is as a person. You guess not? Jesus, I'm asking if you are sexually aroused by women, not asking if you want butter on your toast." Agents from a mysterious entity called DEMA are on Steven’s tail, but what do they want from him? Do they want to capture him? Experiment on him? Neutralise him? Whatever that means. Steven won’t be hanging around to find out. After evading an attempted capture from one of DEMA’s more unscrupulous agents, Steven accidentally manifests his powers in public, attracting the attention of a handsome, mysterious stranger who says he can help Steven control his emomancy. Steven jumps at the chance to finally feel in control – the fact that this stranger is super cute is an added bonus. Sometimes, emotions can be a little too powerful . . . 17-year-old Steven has a big problem . . . Whenever he feels intense emotions, weird things happen. Like when he kissed a boy for the first time, and the boy's head literally exploded.

In my opinion, this book was written with some good character development. The author has done an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and creating a vivid sense of place throughout the story. I liked the inclusion of a cheat sheet within the book that outlines the various effects experienced by the protagonist, Steven, when he undergoes different emotional states. This cheat sheet not only added an extra layer of depth to the story but also serves as a helpful guide for readers to understand the intricate connection between Steven's emotions and the extraordinary superpowers that manifest as a result.

Synopsis

This is the story of a teenage boy named Steven Percival , who is known as `Percy' to his close friends and family. Steven is seventeen years old and he has a gift that he does not want. This is because whenever he has strong emotions about anything, strange things begin to happen around him. This gift affects his friends and other people close by because it makes them behave strangely. He also fears that he may have accidently killed another young man because of his powers. This is why he runs away to a small seaside town called Grunsby-On-Sea because he thinks that nobody will look for him there.

Everyone loves a wholesome queer romantic comedy, especially one set in the UK, but what makes this sparkling debut unique, is embedding all that in a brilliantly exciting sci-fi plot. All in all, I could tell these characters are very important to the author and feel very personal and I loved it.

Every character is so lovable in their own way, I love Troy so much and he is literally the definition of a teenager with a crush, so cringey and awkward is so real. Steven’s emotions feel so genuine every time, and as he is incapable of controlling the consequences of them, you know the real emotion even if it is masked because of the magic happening in him. Debut author David Fenne joins Laura Jayne Dodd in the Forbidden Planet TV green room to discuss the creation of his wonderful new YA novel OVEREMOTIONAL! David Fenne’s debut novel was intriguing, I was not sure what to expect with that title and the cover art. It was a book about feelings, friendship and love, made into a science fiction capturing the target audience of young adult reader. This book touches on LGBTQ+ very early on and continued til the end of the book, I like that it is open. I think the author draws a lot of parallel with exploration of feelings of the main character, feelings for his friends, romantic or otherwise to the science fiction power of his. There’s certainly the mystery of how these power come about, the investigations of missing persons and the history, those kept me interested and going. Shout-out to the Enid Blyton reference, I had read so many of her books as a kid and I finally see her mentioned in a contemporary YA book!

Overemotional by David Fenne published by Bonnier Books @ ForbiddenPlanet.com - UK and Worldwide Cult Entertainment Megastore Of course it's also a queer story. And not just in a "this character happens to be gay" way. It's integral part of the plot. PicnicMonth takes place each July and #TeddyBearPicnicDay on July 10th may well be of interest to teens with younger siblings. Cedars Bourton has lots of good ideas to celebrate the day. Well, funny you should ask! I’ve just handed in book 2 in the OVEREMOTIONAL Trilogy! The gang will be heading off to London for university, but not everything is as it seems . . . [CFi ed: I didn’t notice that it was first in a trilogy and I’m so pleased that we’ll meet them again a little older, with the new challenges of uni!]
