About this deal

As Huw matures the tone of the book darkens. Labor and management conflicts come to the valley and its mines and Huw's family is drawn into disputes that threaten to tear father from son, brother from brother. The book has twice been adapted by the BBC for television, in 1960 and 1975. The 1960 adaptation featured Eynon Evans, Rachel Thomas and Glyn Houston. The 1975 production, scripted by Elaine Morgan, starred Stanley Baker, Siân Phillips, and Nerys Hughes. The 1940 film, starring Maureen O'Hara and a young Roddy McDowell, was filmed in Malibu and directed by American John Ford. It won six Oscars and was adapted twice for BBC television. A glitzy musical followed. Llewellyn would continue the tale by relating how his birth had been entered into a family Bible which was lost when the family home was bombed during the Second World War.

Narration by an older Huw recalls, "Men like my father cannot die. They are with me still, real in memory as they were in flesh, loving and beloved forever. How green was my valley then."

Onun tecessüsü, onun hayatı kavrama şekli, muhakemesi, çıkarımları... Onunla beraber büyüdüm. Onun sırlarını sakladım. Although acclaimed by critics, literary contemporaries and commentators, How Green Was My Valley perplexed mining communities. They did not wholly recognise themselves in what was supposed to be an authentic tale and the sentimentality brought its own controversy. But they were won over by the novel's enthusiastic reception elsewhere. He lived a peripatetic life, travelling widely throughout his life. Before World War II, he spent periods working in hotels, wrote a play, worked as a coal miner and produced his best known novel. During World War II, he rose to the rank of Captain in the Welsh Guards. Following the war, he worked as a journalist, covering the Nuremberg Trials, and then as a screenwriter for MGM. Late in his life, he lived in Eilat, Israel.

In 2017, the book was also adapted as a short film parts of which are shown in the music video [6] for the song Pleader [7] by the band alt-J. There is a wholeness about a woman, of shape, and sound, and colour, and taste, and smell, a quietness that is her, that you will want to hold tightly to you, all, every little bit, without words, in peace, for jealousy for the things that escape the clumsiness of your arms. So you feel when you love. Everywhere was singing, all over the house was singing, and outside the house was alive with singing, and the very air was song.” The Marged story arc was beyond ridiculous, I didn't buy her going crazy and setting herself on fire just because of Owen. Her whole relationship with Owen occurred over the course of a few days, they didn't have a long romance or a deep connection of any kind. Their relationship consisted entirely of a few kisses and half-hearted promises over the course of a week. But for some bizarre reason Marged never recovered from his rejection, even when she got married to Gwilym (who she knew better and had far more of a bond with). Yea, Owen was barely in her life long enough for him to have such an effect on her. The whole thing was daft, if their courtship had been longer or they'd been childhood sweethearts or something then her Owen-related madness/death might have been plausible but that wasn't the case. Ugh, I hated what happened to Marged, so bloody nonsensical. As the industrial revolution transformed Britain, the coal-mining regions of South Wales fairly basked in prosperity. And food in plenty. Some of Llewellyn's descriptions caught my breath such as this one of Angharad when fighting with 14-year-old Huw: By the time Hollywood got hold of it, the miners were cheery chaps singing all the way home from the pits in perfect three-part harmony like Disney dwarfs. But How Green Was My Valley is still an abiding classic. From a strictly historical point of view it doesn't stand up. In fact, parts are plain wrong. He has the miners paid in gold sovereigns. Well, many of them would have been pleased to see one!
