[ citation needed] I have so much respect for this man - because he was careful to include the bad times during this ordeal. It wasn't a book thanking the staff and the network and his friends and family, no. It was saying how hard it all was, and how he acted badly in some parts or how hard he was to get along with, etc. He gave us the true story, which I don't think happens every time with these kinds of books. Mindy, his wife, wrote the chapters about the three weeks post-accident because he doesn't remember them at all, and then they alternated stories about the next month or so, with some overlapping scenes that read totally differently. She's not nearly as good a writer, but she's pretty solid once she settles in to the story, and she wasn't afraid to write about the bad parts, either. a b c "Top Gear's Hammond Has Brain Injury". During the news segment of Top Gear 's 2010 USA Road Trip special, Hammond openly expressed his dislike of the band Genesis. This fact was later exploited by his co-presenters (particularly by Clarkson) in three special episodes: during the Middle East Special, when they installed a secret second stereo unit in his Fiat Barchetta that only plays the band's Live over Europe 2007 album; in the India Special, Clarkson played the same song used in the previous special (albeit the Seconds Out version) through the megaphone mounted in his Jaguar XJS, despite Hammond driving a different car (a Mini Cooper Sport). In the 2013 Africa Special, Clarkson once again played Genesis in an attempt to get Hammond to let him pass. a b Litson, Jo (23 November 2008). "Richard Hammond, Hamster driven by Top Gear". Some accounts suggested that the accident occurred during an attempt to break the British land speed record, [15] [21] but the Health and Safety Executive report on the crash found that a proposal to try to officially break the record was vetoed in advance by Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman, due to the risks and complexities of such a venture. [17] :4 The report stated: "Runs were to be carried out in only one direction along a pre-set course on the Elvington runway. Vampire's speed was to be recorded using GPS satellite telemetry. The intention was to record the maximum speed, not to measure an average speed over a measured course, and for (Hammond) to describe how it felt." [17] :1 Suzuki GSX-R1100. In an interview for Bike Magazine in 2014, Hammond stated: "When I was a kid I saw a GSX-R 1100 being filled up in a petrol station. I thought it was amazing. I know this isn't the collectable slab-sided one, but I don't care." [127] [131] Richard says in his introduction that the book "is about how to travel in a way that is sensitive to the climate and nature emergencies". It is primarily focused on experiences that have a lower carbon footprint and provide a positive effect on the conservation of biodiversity. It is also focused on individual actions that can make significant difference to the impact of how we travel. This book glosses over Hammond's childhood, early days in radio, and rise to the BBC. I would've appreciated a lot more detail here (I was hoping for some Jeremy Clarkson and James May tidbits); the main focus of this book is the crash, his recovery, and in a complete surprise to me (I mean, the book is called On The Edge: MY Story), wife Mindy's narration for almost half of the book about her experience caring for Hammond while he is in and out of consciousness following the accident, and during his rehabilitation. It is a very easy read, and felt at times as if I were sat with the Author talking about this over a cup of something hot. There are moments in the book where it feels as if the Author were in two minds as to whether he was going to share a particular item with the reader as it was too painful to relive, but share he does so as to make anyone, and their Families, feel like they are not alone whilst going through this kind of thing. He then, from chapter two, goes on to talk about his life from when he was a child - about his family, his brothers, the normal boyish things he did to hurt himself so that the attention would be on him, and finally, his developing love for cars and bikes starting from a bicycle and a home-made ramp. He writes about his teenage life, and his first proper jobs working for radio stations around England. There are some really funny stories in this section. I initially read this book because I was an avid Top Gear Fan. I was looking to learn more about "the Hamster" and specifically about the crash that nearly ended his life. Search it out if you've never heard of it. What i ended up reading was so much more. This book is Richards life story. Who he is now, who he was before the crash, and what appears to be a very honest look into head trauma and recovery told by two sides (Richard and his Wife). This book has a short introduction documenting his childhood and early career leading up to his job on Top Gear. The other 90% of the book is from when he had the near fatal crash driving a jet powered dragster. He barely walked away from that alive and it left him with some long lasting brain damage. This book is about the effects of that crash and the long recovery process. Ride with: Richard Hammond". bikemagazine.co.uk/. 29 November 2016. Archived from the original on 18 March 2017 .
