In the room above the kitchen the main feature is the piano, where Hermione was teaching Ron playing Für Elise in the Deathly Hallows. The hair component and head chosen for Ron Weasley appear similarly appropriate, but this torso is new.
Sirius Black used to be quite rare, but in recent years we’ve seen him numerous sets, but always in his prisoners clothes. Hand-in-hand with the design, playability feels severely compromised by the design of the interior rooms. The bottoms of all of the moving pieces are also well covered with smooth inverted circle tiles (boat studs), ensuring the building will slide easily on almost any surface. It is great to see this iconic location in an official LEGO set for the first time – and even better that it include the ability to appear in the middle of the row of town houses!As most Harry Potter sets have focused on the earlier more kids friendly movies, we have never seen 12 Grimmauld Place as a LEGO set. Harry eventually learned that it was a Black family tradition to cut the heads off of their house-elves when they were too old to carry tea trays! The set will be available for purchase worldwide in June (a little bit later in the USA on June 19th).
That being said, for the sheer number of characters who appeared at this location, no two Harry Potter fans will likely agree on the best selection to include in such a set. The design and colors remain true to the source material, with the “traitors” to the Black family scratched out of the tree, although there should be a skull for Regulus instead of a regular head. It may be easy to dismiss the core functionality of the set – that the house effortlessly moves in and out from between its neighbouring properties – as a gimmick, but that can only be so until you build it and then get to play with it, at which point that’s all you’ll be doing, for just how effective and fun it is.Altogether, delivering on play and display ensures that beyond what is a noteworthy play feature, 76408 12 Grimmauld Place is a set with the same longevity for both aspects as any other LEGO Harry Potter set. Moreover, the lampposts beside both houses look odd because the onscreen houses are part of a longer terrace. Join well-known characters to check out Sirius Black’s room, the Black family tree tapestry and many more magical locations and amazing features within the famous secret society. Kingsley is better – with some more colours and the rather detailed printing extending down onto the legs as well.
Inside you’ll find 7 bags of parts and a pack containing the instruction booklet and one sticker sheet. The architecture is both detailed and simple with arched windows, front-of-house railings, and brickwork that recreates many townhouses you would find in the streets of London.
For a first visit to this location in LEGO form, this is something that sees 76408 12 Grimmauld Place well and truly deliver on the wow factor. We do feel it is important to show that not all LEGO Investments are a great addition to your portfolios and this article shows some of the weaker recently retired sets. Their modularity has the drawback of compromising the structural integrity of the model overall, so you have to be very careful when moving it.
From minifigures to full-on castle sets, the LEGO Harry Potter collection has something for every fan, young or old. This double-sided head was introduced in 75945 Expecto Patronum and remains well-suited to Sirius Black, although the angry face is perhaps overly expressive.In Bag 4 we build the ground floors of Number 12’s adjacent properties including two ornate lamp-posts flanking each building. The minifigures are exciting though and I am pleased with this rendition of Grimmauld Place, but I think the location offers potential for something larger and maybe even better.
