About this deal

February– If you’re growing potatoes this year, start chitting them in February. Nope, that’s not a typo –‘chitting’ means buying seed potatoes and placing them on a windowsill so that small green shoots can grow through. You may also be able to force some rhubarb – put a pot over the clump and watch it shoot upwards looking for light.

VegPlotter is an online software tool born out of a need to get organised on the allotment plot. Whether you call your Vegetable Garden an Allotment, Homestead, Urban Farm or just your Vegetable Garden, we provide an online planning tools to help. Allotment plots can be pretty big and you need to move around it easily. Before you start digging think about the plot layout, where your beds will go and how you will access them. You also need to find the right place for them too. To do so, you need to think about the amount of sunlight in the area , how exposed it is, whether there is enough space and finally, if the soil in that area would be hospitable for the fruit tree. You can buy fish bone and blood, growmore and other good quality fertilisers at garden centres and supermarkets if you don’t want to make your own compost. I really recommend home composting though – you’ll have plenty of clippings to get rid of and bonfires are not usually allowed at allotments. Actually I found I used a combination of things. My journal combined with the Half hour allotment book to work out the plants and also the on-line software and grid paper.

The mad rush to get your seed in is over and now it’s time to hope the sun stays to finish ripening everything! Put in some winter crops when you get the room. When thinking of the layout of your allotment, you need to plan the space well. Grass paths help you avoid walking over the beds and compromising the beds.Smothering weeds with opaque mulches (carpet is no longer recommended) requires at least one growing season to work well. This can be an effective way of dealing with parts of a plot that are not intended to be planted for that season (it's easy to overdo it with a new allotment so take your time and don't worry if it takes several seasons to fully bring an overgrown plot into cultivation) If you're working with a larger plot, you can certainly add in an extra pathway and more raised beds . Ideally your new allotment will be in a sunny position but this, inevitably, is not always the case. If you have been given a plot which is partly or totally in shade, choosing fruit and vegetables that tolerant these conditions is essential. Fruit in shade
