About this deal

Birdlife Australia’s Sean Dooley argued magpies could recognise individual faces and “tend to swoop the people they see as a threat”. Alan McGee cuts a rather puerile and pathetic figure by comparison, a Thatcherite narcissist driven by resentment and "ambition", like the unlovable Jesus and Mary Chain who he spent much of the early 1980s trying to start his "revolution" with.

Gorging on the book's anecdotal feast, one struggles to comprehend not only how Creation survived its hand-to-mouth existence long enough to become a potent force, but just how its cast of eccentrics, egotists and sociopaths eventually triumphed in such a brutal environment without one of them dying. The size of a house brick, this book was a labour of love in the reading and, no doubt, in the writing.Payments made using National Book Tokens are processed by National Book Tokens Ltd, and you can read their Terms and Conditions here. Founded by Alan McGee in 1983, Creation Records achieved notoriety as the home of Primal Scream, the Jesus and Mary Chain and other anti-Establishment acts. One of the earliest bands on Alan McGee's famed CREATION RECORDS imprint, the LOFT played a style of British indie guitar rock that stood out at the time. My Magpie Eyes Are Hungry for the Prize transcends the parochial concerns of most rock biographies, although it comes steeped in them too.

While it is true they caused immense financial problems for Creation, their amazingly original Loveless album is now generally regarded as a masterpiece on par with Sgt. The Creation Records Story is in equal parts black comedy, tragedy, farce and urban myth, laced with large, large helpings of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. Starting out with twee pop Creation built a repertoire of being the best label to have jangly music. James Glindemann, 68, said he was about to tuck into a Chinese takeaway lunch on Tuesday at an outdoor mall in Sale, about 200km east of Melbourne, when he was suddenly and viciously swooped by a magpie. It takes you on a long trip, starting with punk rock hitting Glasgow in 1976, leading through the many years of scuffling, Creation Records shoving out any old rough mix by The Jazz Butcher to have new product for "The Kids" to keep some turnover rolling for the business. The great thing about Cavanagh is his objectivity something missing from the awful Hewitt/McGee book put out at the same time. Andy Strickland formed the Caretaker Race, whose singles and sole album are acclaimed to this day, whilst Bill Black (aka Prince) formed The Wishing Stones, whose singles and sadly unreleased ahead-of-it's-time album were the foundation of the Heavenly label.

Working for magazines like Q, Select, Sound and Mojo, he has proven himself a journalist of rare insight, style and integrity and conducted a huge number of entertaining and memorable interviews. As the 80's turned into the 90's McGee was getting luckier and soon he had Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine and Ride all delivering classic albums which are still hailed today. He threatened to beat up the concierge in his hotel when the plastic door-key to his room didn't work (until he realised he was on the wrong floor). Doubtless conceived as an orthodox rags-to-riches account of how Alan McGee's stewardship of the most celebrated independent record label in the world took him from a Glasgow housing scheme to 10 Downing Street, accruing vast wealth and narcotic-fuelled notoriety along the way, Cavanagh's project got overtaken by events.Anything that gives me more insight into the early years of the Jesus and Mary Chain is always going to get a thumbs up from me. how Creation Records suddenly pulled-out its funding for their North American tour which the band paid for themselves (albeit in a much smaller/fewer city tour- where they were absolutely amazing in case you missed it) this book was still fascinating esp. It's the tale of how a Scottish train driver left his job in 1980 and moved to London to start a record label.

Spends much of its length discussing the lesser-known (and infinitely more interesting) early years of the label (The Loft for the win!
