About this deal

Having already launched the entry-level FD1, and the higher-end model, the FD5, which have both come across our office, it only makes sense that FiiO would release a midrange dynamic driver-based IEM in the FD3. Founded in 2007, FiiO went from being a small, chi-fi outsider, to one of the biggest companies in the audiophile world. IEM, headphone amps, DACs, and obviously DAPs, they did it all and did it well. So much that when a new player comes out, it usually becomes the benchmark that other brands have to refer to, like the FiiO M11 or the Q3.

It’s a very cool-looking IEM, thanks to the diamond-cut faceplate and I still use them at this very moment. Here is an excerpt of my review: The FD11 and the FH11 are from what FiiO calls their “Bionic Conch” series, but maybe Biologic was a more fun word to use, considering the shells were inspired by the natural designs of ocean-dwelling snails, which can often have hypnotizingly beautiful designs elements and colors. The shells are mainly divided into 2 parts. First, there is a short stem where the vents and the terminals are found, then the second is a circular shell that houses the 12mm dynamic drivers themselves.

Tech Highlights

The FiiO FH3 is a hybrid entry-level IEM. It mixes a classic dynamic driver (10mm Titanium driver) with two Knowles BA to reproduce the full (hearable) frequency range. Like the FH5, its big brother, the FH3 gets a very cool aluminum/magnesium shell, that feels both sturdy and comfy, detachable cables, and most of all the S.Turbo acoustic design. Since the FD3’s shells are made of an aluminum-magnesium alloy, it’s on the lighter side. The overall size of the shells themselves are also smaller than most other IEMs. This makes sure that the FD3 can easily fit most ears and remain comfortable. The FiiO FD3 comes with a nicely tuned V shaped sound signature that shows a slightly warmer than neutral tonality. The lower frequency region shows a great level of depth and body along with a nice breeze of warmth, the midrange on the other hand is slightly recessed due to the V shaped sound signature that sounds pretty crisp and transparent, while the treble area is fairly energetic, bright yet controller. A basic bundle that puts the FD11 more in line with the JD7 than the FD3 Pro. Additional accessories

The FD3 Pro follows in the footsteps of its FD line siblings in using a newly designed 12mm flagship-level dynamic driver. Inside the FD3 Pro's striking shell lies a driver with a robust magnet of 1.5 Tesla magnetic flux paired with an ultra-fine copper-clad aluminium Japanese Daikoku voice coil for an amazing, powerful sound.

Recommended accessories

The sound nozzle has an “Interchangeable Sound Tube” design that we have already seen on the bigger brother FD5. The FD3 offers also two different Interchangeable Sound Tubes like the FD5, one bass and one balanced sound tube. The large sound tube has a more balanced sound signature, while the bass tube offers a slightly more lively and bass-focused signature. The FiiO FD3 is a quite efficient In-Ear Monitor thanks to an impedance of 32 Ω and a sensitivity of 111dB/mW. This makes the FD3 pretty compatible with most audio sources like Smartphone’s, Tablets or small Digital Audio Players/Mp3 players that do have in general a relative weak amplification. Following the FH5s, you have the FiiO FH7s , a 4-BA + 1DD IEM that was given the same visual revamp with a more aggressive look. It’s a tad more expensive, with more drivers and different tuning, but as usual, the price difference makes a big difference in terms of performance. FiiO sent me a pair for review, and if I was a bit dubious at first, the FD5 ended up being as good as advertised. Here is an excerpt of that review: With the shorter stems and lips on the FD3, the ear tips that come with the FD3 are all comfortable. However, care must be taken for the IEMs to fit inside your ears properly, so pushing on the circular part to get the right fit for the IEM is a must to get the best sound out of them.

The FD3/FD3 Pro has a simple, yet beautiful appearance based on the theme of curves. The unique celluloid panel is covered with Z5D film coating glass for a pure yet fresh transparent look And the aluminium- magnesium alloy of the body makes the FD3/FD3 Pro exceptionally light, making it easier and more pleasurable to carry around. The aluminium-magnesium alloy main body is made man industrial process combining five-axis CNC processing and hand polishing. Without having an outer PVC sheath, the cable is soft throughout the entire length virtually eliminating any possibility of microphonics. So on-the-go listening would be as quiet as possible on a pair of wired IEMs.The diaphragm is ¼ lighter than Beryllium or aluminum, which is what I feel should be the industry standard these days, not just for tensile strength, but also for raw purity and fidelity. Good build quality for the price, very ergonomic and is comfortable to wear during longer listening sessions. The subbass region of the FiiO FD3 is slightly more pronounced than those of the TinHiFi T5. The FD3 has the slightly edge when it comes to the speed and control in this area. The midbass area of the FD3 shows a better sense of speed and authority, while it is also more impactful, which is especially audible in complex bass passages.
