About this deal

Though later revealed as a hoax, this image fueled the mania surrounding the sightings, and is used on the dust jacket and as the frontispiece to Gould’s book. The story is haunting, and along with its lovely, detailed illustrations, it captures the look and feel of Scotland perfectly. Every year millions of people visit Loch Ness hoping to catch a glimpse of Nessius Neversauras, the Loch Ness Monster.

The Secret of the Kelpie is a classic tale of the kelpie that is wonderfully and beautifully retold for children ages 4-7 in this gripping adaptation by renowned Scottish children's author and storyteller Lari Don, and enhanced with the breathtaking illustrations by artist Philip Longson. They only see an enemy: a blinkered ivory-tower elite who lives in a solid gold house, has never had a proper job, and dives every evening into a money pit of Science Dollars provided by the government or something. Its stunning beauty draws many, but far more come to experience the mystery of the monster that may lurk in its waters. Details of Spicer’s account make it likely that he and his (still nameless) wife saw bounding deer (an idea, not original to me, discussed in Hunting Monsters); the details of his sighting changed significantly over the years and demonstrate (I say again: demonstrate) both embellishment and a predilection on Spicer’s part to speculate. I was a believer once, I remind you, and I’ve said all sorts of silly things supporting the existence of monsters that my critics never seem to be aware of.

One of the best things about our particular copy of the book is that a previous owner left annotations. Since then, there have been photographs and films that allegedly show proof of the monster’s existence. Binns terms this the ‘archive problem’, and it’s common to many subject areas that involve ‘paperwork’.

I am of course especially interested (I hope understandably) in what Binns says about my own Hunting Monsters, a volume he classes as part of the same ‘cultural cryptozoology’ school as Loxton and Prothero’s Abominable Science! A ‘mid-sized’ object (look at the ripples), that’s white or near-white, has a sinuous appendage at one end, a short, pointed appendage at the other, and a dark appendage that disappears into the water close to one of its ends.

This led to the first ever book on the monster, The Loch Ness Monster and Others (BOOK SOLD), a 1934 collection of eyewitness accounts gathered by Rupert T.Natasa Ilincic is an artist and illustrator originally from Croatia and now living and working in Edinburgh. Churchill Collection of Steve Forbes and major works that shine a light on key chapters of American history. Binns notes that Watson has been useful in uncovering new data but more impressive are the substantial number of occasions in which Binns corrects or contests Watson’s interpretations.
